Capacity Building for Climate Change Adaptation and Food Security through Urban Agriculture in Abijo, Ibeju-Lekki LGA, Lagos, Nigeria

LUFASI aims to develop a model for innovative and smart agricultural practices in cities targeting mostly women and youth, including a ?school farm and future demonstration project? in the rural Abijo community in Ibeju Lekki LGA. This community is one of the growing urban communities in Lekki Peninsula, Lagos and comprises of about 6,000 families (Election Census, 2016) of native/landowners and a large number of migrants from various parts of Nigeria who live in the community based on land acquisition for housing. The community is headed by a Baale who is the traditional head and lead the elders and chief?s council.
This project focuses both on an active community and a government policy model as well as a children demonstrative project. The Project targets 30 families (mostly women and youth) to be involved in skill acquisition and training on varied forms of innovative agriculture practices. The government policy inputs aims atto achievine g the development of an advocacy tool specifying urban agriculture for citizen education on food security, while the children education model is a farm and future demonstration project as a pilot in the community school to form a component of the climate education for children.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

At the end of the second quarter, we will produce online and paper print copies of the Project brochure for public awareness on results and challenges. 1000 copies of the printed brochures will be distributed to public visitors to LUFASI and offices of major stakeholders including the Abijo community. 1000 copies of Awareness poster on the interaction between urban agriculture and climate change adaptation will be produced and distributed to community members, government offices and schools in Lekki area. As a major part of the public advocacy, LUFASI will organize a 13-week advocacy program on radio with contents focusing on methods and actions on urban agriculture as a tool for food security and climate change adaptation. We will also organize 2 market-based forums for interactive sessions on urban agriculture practices.

Notable Community Participation

From the 30 community members chosen, 5 of them will be youth and of the 90 remaining community members that will be chosen, most will have youth involved

Gender Focus

Lagos is a city that has its rural areas still under the patriarchy, leaving the women fully dependent on the men for food, shelter and basic amenities. This project provides a platform where women and youth can be empowered socially and economically. From project inception and planning, the project has integrated gender and involvement of all major strata of the community including women of Abijo community, men of the community and children.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Organise cross learning and experience sharing sessions with at least two (2) similar smart agriculture projects to promote understanding of the project and to share knowledge for possible replication of project.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Organize a 6-session (3-months) training program for 30 community members on urban agriculture to train and develop their skills to bring empowerment into the community.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Story-telling and documentaries are critical and represent a direct visual interpretation of lessons, results, challenges and solutions. We will produce short video documentaries on key result areas such as training and capacity building on urban agriculture, policy development efforts on urban agriculture as a local tool for climate adaptation as well as children farm for future for African kids in cities.

Policy Impact

We seek to organize a Roundtable on climate change and food security in Lagos State Tackling food insecurity in the Abijo rural community. This is to ensure increased awareness on the importance of urban agriculture and access to good fresh foods and for Urban Agriculture to be adopted as a policy by the Lagos state ministry of agriculture.

Project Results

1. Successfully organized a Project Action Plan workshop with participation of all major Stakeholder Groups: School, community and government for a better understanding of the role of all stakeholders including various participants in the project.
2. 30 participants trained and fully established.
3. Successfully set up the 30 participants (9 males and 21 females) trained in the areas of: urban vegetable gardening, snail farming and fish farming including LUFASI?s own experimental demonstration farms (snailery, urban vegetable gardening and collapsible fish tanks) farms.
4. A young farmer?s club comprising of 50 (27 males and 23 females) pupils with two teachers to head the club was created in Abijo community school and a farm established.
