Floating Solar Cold-Dryer Prototype for Sustainable Fisheries in Makoko Coastal Communities, Lagos, Nigeria
The proposed So-Cold project aims to design, fabricate and demonstrate an innovative floating solar cooler-dryer prototype for combined cold storage and smoke-free drying of fish based on waste heat utilization and waste minimization strategies.
A demonstration of the floating solar cooler-dyer prototype will be carried out in the Makoko community and new business models including pay-as-you go and mobile money schemes will be tested to facilitate uptake by indigenous people and local artisans. The prototype will help to reduce fish spoilage, food insecurity and environmental pollution. The integrated business solution can improve economic co-benefits in coastal communities. The lessons learnt from the proposed So-Cold project can be upscaled to other coastal communities across Nigeria.
