Community Based Sustainable Forest Management in Akwa Esuk Iyamba Community of Cross River State. Nigeria
This project seeks to reduce human activities responsible for climate change especially deforestation and bush burning that account for emission of .carbon dioxide into atmosphere. The target community, .Akwa Esuk Iyamba is a forest community with , a community which this project is to be located has a population size of 4,785. Men being 2,304, and Women 2,481 (Census 20069) and projected population of 9,603 as at 2019. The It is a forest community, the main occupation of the people are farming, fishing and trading. The problems faced in this community are deforestation, bush burning during farming resulting into high emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which contribute to global warming. There is unsustainable tapping exploitation of forest resources against UNREDD guidelines,; low level of awareness on climate change,; high level of poverty and indiscriminate extraction of fuel wood.
However, tThe aim of the project is to promote awareness for the purpose of will reducinge deforestation and promoting sustainable exploitation of and enhance carbon sink for sustainable development, it is important to enhance forest resources which people depend upon .
The target beneficiaries of this project are 500 people comprising of men, women and youth. The organization carried out a base line survey and needs assessment in 2016 where all the community stakeholders participated which gave rise to the choice of the project activities.
