Restoration of Degraded Irrigated Lands by Implementing Lucerne and Cotton Crop Rotation, Soil Fertility Improvement, Cotton Fields Yield Enhancement
The aim of the project is to demonstrate the possibility of restoration and sustainable management of degraded irrigated lands through the introduction of alfalfa-cotton crop rotation in the fields of the village of Syrdarya, Koksu.
Project Objectives:
Task 1. Introduction of alfalfa-cotton crop rotation on degraded irrigated lands to restore soil fertility.
Task 2. Implementation of autumn-early spring moisture recharge irrigation on degraded irrigated lands.
Task 3. Organization and implementation of an informational and educational campaign for the restoration of arable landscapes.
Expected results:
As a result of the project, the following results are expected:
1. Restored 29.72 hectares at the expense of the GEF and 34 hectares will be developed by peasants at the expense of own funds of degraded irrigated lands in the Koksu aul district.
2. An agreement was reached between interested parties (PA Syrdaria, Peasant farms, rural akimat) on joint project activities.
3. The ecological state of arable landscapes will improve and cotton productivity will increase by 35-40%.
4. The conditions have been created for stopping further degradation of 60 hectares of irrigated land: 4 locks have been restored, 100 m of pipes have been laid for irrigation of sections of the TDP.
5. The introduction of crop rotation on 29.72 hectares of arable land will make it possible to obtain 750 pieces of pressed alfalfa hay from 1 hectare.
6. Alfalfa crop rotation will improve the soil structure, its physical and chemical properties (due to the ability of alfalfa to accumulate nitrogen in the soil, which is necessary for some crops for an abundant crop).
7. Increase in soil fertility, humus by 30-40%.
8. Training at least 150 members of the Kuksuy aul district municipal district in alfalfa-cotton crop rotation methods.
9. A recommendation was published in the Kazakh language on the technology of crop rotation and the use of water-charging irrigation and salt washing.
10. 4 Field Days and 1 demonstration seminar for members of the Koksu SB JI were held.
