EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
1. Project Title: Community Based Adaptation for Fisheries-Dependent Communities of Rodrigues, Republic of Mauritius
2. Project Site: Baie du Nord, Rodrigues, Republic of Mauritius
3. Proponent: Shoals Rodrigues - a Mauritian non-governmental organisation established in September 2001, with registration number 6717, to undertake marine research, education and training activities in Rodrigues, using the integration of these disciplines to promote conservation and sustainable development. Shoals Rodrigues has three core programmes, which correspond to the organisation?s objectives as follows: (A) Research Programme, (B) Training Programme and (C) Education Programme. As an independent NGO, Shoals Rodrigues always aims to ensure that all activities undertaken by the organisation and hosted researchers are in the local interest and of benefit to Rodrigues Island.
4. Project Objective: The objective of this project is to help fisher-dependent communities on Rodrigues to realise and prepare for the potential consequences of climate change. This will be achieved through: (a) completing a Coastal Vulnerability Assessment for Baie du Nord and the surrounding vicinity to aid coastal management planning, (b) supporting livelihood diversification through the establishment of sustainable farming activities to reduce the community?s dependency on fishing; (c) addressing the issue of water shortages through the provision of rainwater harvesting tanks; and (d) transferring lessons learnt to local Government.
Additional Request for funding:
After the successful completion of the project and following the SIDS CBA National Review Workshop held in November 2019, it was ascertained that the beneficiaries are still keen to start a sheep rearing activity which they could not do, as their request to local authorities to get a piece of land for livestock rearing was not successful. they get the funding as this will help them achieve a better living standard. However, they did get individual chicken pens and chicks, which have increased their income. They showed keen interest towards individual sheep rearing which along with the chicken and eggs will help them save more money on different household expenses and start getting better livelihood options. As indicated in the national review report, they want to also invest in egg trays and business cards which will help in the marketing of their products and will let them be widely known, thus raising the value of their products. Regarding these suggestions we would like to request an additional funding of Rs. 370,000 to contribute towards these costs which are as follows:
