Development of the Zion Hill Reforestation Reserve and Protected area into a Fitness Trail
Zion Hill is a mountain that overlooks the town of Barrouallie, located on the western most side of St. Vincent. In the early 1990?s Zion Hill suffered many forest fires every year during the dry season, leaving it as an eyesore. This has resulted in heavy run off and considerable land erosion during the wet season due to lack of trees and forest covers. During the latter part of the decade, the forestry division embarked on a project to reforest the area and manage it to prevent forest fires and to beautify it. Efforts had also been made to develop the area into a trail but had been quite limited and suffer many setbacks due to lack of funding and community involvement to co-manage the site to ensure its sustainability and the non-wood products are developed. These include recreation, health, fitness and exercise and sports. On considering these issues, the Barrouallie Tourism and Heritage Organisation (BTHO) has seen it necessary to incorporate other aspect of the forest product to encourage conservation and sustainable management of the site while bringing a novel development that will benefit members of the community. This product is expected to be the first of its kind on the island of St. Vincent. The project will develop Zion Hill into a fitness trail and recreation site that will add to the biodiversity, conservation and sustainable management of the forest and forest products, mainly fitness, health, sports and recreation. The management of these developments will improve the management of the entire forest reserved area. In addition, such development will add value to the tourism product in Barrouallie and add to the economic gain of residents in the area.
