Rehabilitation and Maintenance of the Top Public Well in Ashton *Note: Originally SVG/SGP/OP6/Y4/CORE/CC/20/06
Water on the Grenadine islands is a precious resource and most islanders are acutely aware of the need for protection and conservation, plus the construction and maintenance of adequate rainwater storage facilities. Indeed, most households and private businesses pursue rational ?coping strategies? in relation to their current income levels and investment options. It is evident that now it seems to have longer dry spells than usual and most households cope by utilizing their available water resources as effectively as possible. However, the situation is becoming more difficult, especially as the impact of climate change becomes more prevalent and the islands experience more frequent water shortages.

This project entails the Rehabilitation and Maintenance of the upper top well and central well in Ashton, Union Island by constructing two covers to keep the wells closed and clean and a housing structure for security purposes. Standing pipes will be available at both wells to access water instead of pulling it by buckets and ropes which is very strenuous. It is not feasible for proper use of drinking but it can be used to flush toilets, bathing and washing in emergency situations with the help of Central Water Sewerage Authority.
