Supporting Community livelihoods and enhancement for sustainable use of marine resources in Mkwiro Village
The proposed project has the primary objective of ?sustainable management of marine biodiversity and improvement of the Mkwiro village community livelihoods? with project specific objectives being
a) Strengthen the capacity of the Mkwiro Eco-friendly Conservation group on sustainable eco-friendly nature based business initiatives
b) Support sustainable community alternative income generating options
The proposed project is meant to address the high poverty levels within the local community particularly among the women by providing them with knowledge and skills in marketing, organizational and business management and procurement of equipment and tools for making of artefacts from recycled waste.
Additionally, funding from UNDP GEF SGP will be used to enable the group complete the construction of the eco-friendly workshop and hall that will be used to produce artefacts from recycled waste for sale, thus providing members of the group with alternative income options, thereby reducing pressure and dependence on dwindling marine resources.
The project also links closely with the on-going initiative to address resource degradation through waste management and recycling within the Mkwiro village.
The project will be implemented by the Mkwiro Ecofriendly Conservation Group in collaboration with key partners who include the Kwale County Fisheries Department, Seacology Foundation and the Kenya Wildlife Service.
