Incorporating creative arts as a way of promoting ecosystem conservation in Shimoni-Vanga Seascape.
Mchongo Self Help Group located in Vanga ward, Lunga Lunga sub county, was registered in 2014 by social services. It has a 35 membership of 35, majority of whom are youths, and targets youth. The group?s core activities include promotion of awareness on the importance of mangrove forests, marine conservation, impact of HIV/AIDS to the community, and social issues such as drug abuse which affects the youth. Since its formation, the group has engaged in activities such as performing plays, drama, and poems during community meetings. The group has a YouTube channel which it uses as a platform to communicate environmental and societal issues and hence reaching a wider audience.
In order to effectively implement and manage the proposed project, the organization will form a project implementation committee, whose main task will be ensuring timely implementation of project activities, monitoring, and evaluating the project. The project manager who is also the group' secretary will also keep records of the project which can be used as a reference. By working closely with the County fisheries department and KWS, the group will create links with these organizations which can provide an opportunity for future funding.
Proposed project will be implemented in Shimoni-Vanga seascape at large, focusing on the youth, children, and the communities. This project applies art such as plays, drama, comedy, and poems to inform the communities on the benefits of environmental conservation and improved sanitation in order to promote sustainable resource use and community development. Through beach clean-ups and community waste collection, social cohesion and stewardship will be promoted. The project will involve all resource users as well as the County fisheries department, KWS and non-governmental organizations.
