Upstream forest protection and community development of Ban Thongdee, Luangnamtha district, Luangnamtha province is a sustainable forest management project which is aiming at protecting upstream forest. Along with the community development, the project will promote people on growing organic vegetable for sale to Bortan special economic zone. Upstream forest protected area belongs to Ban Thongdee, it's also a source of water supply for rice field in rainy season, and for planting vegetable in dry season. Thongdee forest protected areas is next to large rice field and can be seen from Luangnamtha center, it is very beautiful view and it is called as Luangnamtha charming. However, this forest has been gradually invaded by agricultural activities since 2003 due to no restriction or regulation and clearly border area. Currently some part of the forest has become a part of rubber plantation and it will be continuously invaded, if there is no protection, finally the forest will be cleared as cultivation land and the result is there will have no water for water supply to rice field and no water for vegetable plantation. The project aims to protect the biodiversity and enhance capacity development of the community through upstream forest protection and enhancement in producing to market system particularly organic vegetable and raising livestock for subsistence farming, the surplus could do the trading to local market.
