Sustainable bamboo forest management for livelihood improvement by applying local knowledge
Houaphanh is a mountainous province in the north of Lao PDR. The number of poor communities is high, while there is a high density of natural bamboo forest and other non-timber forest products (NTFPs). The existing natural resource especially bamboo could be a big potential and best fit to livelihood improvements of poor rural upland families. Bamboo is part of rural life and has been used for multiple purposes in daily life such as notably handicraft items is for sales and bamboo shoots were used for household which can generate some additional incomes for rural families. The project target in two villages of Xamneua district, which are individual practice with poor coordination on market access; Both villages are ethic group (Kmu) there are less involved women for the value chain development; poor group functioning to coordinate production, quality and negotiation with the private sector. Lack of long-term vision to ensure their knowledge and skill could be existed to support socio economic development and livelihood improvement in place. The project aims is to increase additional incomes to 100 target producer group members in 2 villages as incentive for capacity building on the bamboo value chain development; build capacity of the committee of target producer group in 2 villages for effective management and sustainable group functioning; and complete bamboo forest management plan to support bamboo activity in one of two villages by applying gender mainstreaming, especially poor members/families as a priority target. In addition, medium households will be included. Overall, 100 people will benefit from the project of sustainable bamboo forest management for livelihood improvement by applying local knowledge.
