Community-Base Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation of Ethnic Minority Group in Bolikhamxay Province
The project has been designed in the context of Lao PDR?s increasing climate change vulnerability. In recent years, the country has experienced major climate hazards, including flooding, droughts and heavy storms. Poor rural households focused on subsistence farming are especially exposed to such events which devastate infrastructure, crops, property, productive land and other assets. A major contributing factor to climate change in Laos is deforestation. Widespread use of chemical fertilizers and inappropriate waste disposal have additional detrimental impacts on the environment. The proposed project will tackle these key issues by introducing clean cooking stoves, Household Biomass Gasifiers (HBGs), which do not require wood or charcoal as energy inputs; and by training beneficiaries in waste management and organic fertilizer production utilizing a leftover product from HBGs, so called bio char. Additionally, the project will raise awareness of climate change impacts, mitigation and adaptation strategies, and other environmental protection matters. It aims to foster a community dialogue involving multiple stakeholders such as local authorities in agriculture and forestry, health, Lao Youth Union (LYU), Lao Women?s Union (LWU), and community members from Ban Phaday and neighboring areas.
