Currently villagers in Kobong and Thaphaiban village, Nakai district, Khammouane province rely mainly on subsistence livelihoods, namely rice cultivation, slash-and-burn practices, wildlife hunting, and Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) collection. For these, more sustainable livelihood practices with higher potential resources to generate incomes is needed. The project will support villagers in beekeeping, integrated family farming, livestock raising and grassing; establish village fund, carry out study trip on natural beekeeping; and conduct market research on honey and NTFPs. The project aims to benefit directly and indirectly 83 households of Kobong village and 65 households of Thaphaiban village. The total number of beneficiaries is 760. This include women, youth, and people with disability as well as indigenous people. The project will employ an inclusive approach by involving all villagers in the target villages, empowering women, youth, and indigenous people, and engaging people with disability to take part in every project activity that is possible. The ultimate result of project is that villagers can live in harmony with nature while making their living more sustainable. Natural beekeeping is strongly associated with forest conservation (more forest more bees and more honey, people can consume and sell their produce). This can easily expand to other communities in Khammouane and Bolikhamxay where sustainable livelihoods are needed, and poverty should be addressed in rural areas. Moreover, integrated family farming, livestock-raising, and grassing will be also introduced as these will be a good model for indigenous communities to improve their livelihoods in the protected area.
