The Canaries Honey Producers started as a group of three persons and later increased their membership from young persons in the community. The members were novices who had to go through a significant learning curve during the Planning Grant phase. By the closure of the project the following results were achieved:

(i) 20 hives were established and operational;
(ii) a nursery with a capacity of 2000 seedlings was established;
(iii) approximately 1000 trees were planted with a 90% survival rate; and
(iv) ten (10) persons had qualified for the National Volunteer Qualifications/CARICOM volunteer skills
certification at Level 2 (Apiculture).

The group through professional assistance and mentoring was able to become proficient in splitting hives; managing an apiary; and bottling, labelling and marketing honey.

Lessons learned were documented in the co-financing area as follows: (i) do not request hugh sums from one donor; (ii) be knowledgeable about your product and the industry; and (iii) be in constant contact with potential donors as it is easy for them to forget you among many organisations requesting assistance.

The grantee had commenced sales of honey and products by the end of the project and made the following revenue in two exhibitions: (i) US$378 from honey juices and smoothies; (ii) US$635 from honey treats; and (iii) US$504 from honey soaps.
