Introducing renewable energy to the pasotoral Mbororo indigenous peoples in Mobe, East region

Mbororo Social and Cultural Development Association (MBOSCUDA), through the project ?Introducing the Renewable energy to the Pastoral Mbororo indigenous peoples? will contribute to reduce the pressure on the natural resources such as firewood for lighting and reduce the chances of future conflicts that may arises between the Pastoral Mbororo indigenous peoples and the local communities who claim the traditional ownership of the land.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Local languages will be used to raise awareness on covid-19 and the effects of climate change. At the begging of the project, communication tools will be identified and produced accordingly using the local language in which the community can easily understand.

Capacity - Building Component

MBOSCUDA needs capacity building to improve in the domains of monitoring and reporting. During the course of the project, support will be given by the MBOSCUDA experts in the Northwest region to the project coordination team.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The current project will produce a report on the need?s assessments, and this will constitute a base for the current and future project of the same nature. This report and other reports of the consultations and capacity building workshops will be shared through the websites, Facebook, twitter and other communication platforms. Briefing papers will also be organized during related events to showcase the project.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The entire activities of the project such as capacity building, consultations and meetings will be held using the local languages. All demonstration will alos be in local languages

Gender Focus

The targeted community is a man dominated community. In the course of the project, we intend to balance the community by providing women and men equal access to energy. 50% of the beneficiaries will be women and this of course will change the narrative. The balance between women and men, with strict respect of the cultural norms will be the guide to this project.

Notable Community Participation

This project has a particular focus on youths as one of the most targeted group. 1O youths will be identified and trained in solar installation and maintenance within the project period and will be expected to carry on the project at the end of the GEF funding.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

With the implementation of the project, women who spent their time looking for firewood will be oriented to other income generating activities such as gardening. These activities will be recorded as one of the contributions of the project.

Project Results

* In cas of Consultation assessment on the Renewable Energy meeting with the Mbororo and local communities. 01 consultation meetings held with the community.The Communities confirm their points of vue on their needs en their fully acceptance and collaboration of the project. The first part of the assessment was base on renewable energy technology which is most appropriate for the Mbororo community. And comprehensive needs of the Mbororo community in terms of renewable energy.

* 10 households solar energy are installed as demonstration. Availability of lights in the households and reduction of insecurity. Reduction in cutting of trees for firewood.

*In terme to sentize Communities on Covid19 pandemic: more than 40 IP (Mbororo community) community members (10 women, 20 men and 10 youth) and 300 faces masques and 300 hand washing soap were purchased and distributed

** Purchase and Installation of Solar kits
In this activity, 10 households of more than 25 houses have been installed with solar energy and currently functional. The solar Kits includes; solar panels, solar Batteries, Bulbs, cables and street lights. Additional two (02) street lights were Installed for the benefit of all the community and some public places also benefited from the project. The trained youths are in charge of the light maintenance and the beneficiaries are also contributing in the upkeeping of the light system. Within the reporting period, 45 light maintenance of the existing solar system was realized by the trained youths. This ensures the sustainability of the project.

** Support to Mobe IP community against COVID-19 pandemic

Additional 80 IP members of Mobe IP community (40 men, 30 women and 10 youth) have been sensitized on COVID-19 pandemic. The sensitization on Covid19 is a continuous process and included in all activities including wearing of facemasks, limiting number of participants on meetings, frequent washing of hands and respecting social distancing. 200 faces masques were distributed to the benefit of the Mobe community. Thanks to the sensitization carried out within the frame work of this project, no Covid19 case have been reported in Mobe.
