Building Capacity Of Kg Tasik Chini OA to Collaboratively Engage With State Agencies to Conserve Their Environment and Develop Sustainable Livelihoods Through an Agroforestry Shared Prosperity Enterprise
The overall goal is to develop sustainable livelihoods for Kampung Orang Asli Tasik Chini and conserve their forest through an agroforestry shared prosperity enterprise.
This goal is achieved through 3 objectives. Firstly, to improve the livelihoods of the Orang Asli (OA) through scaling up the farms from the existing 36 farmers to 75 farmers, and growing fair trade markets for their produce.
Secondly, shaping a shared prosperity enterprise to strengthen the OA?s economic resilience and organisational capacity. Upon reaching economies of scale with 75 farmers and strengthening their agroforestry activities, the OA will have higher and multiple income streams that can triple their current incomes. At this scale, they will also be able to have surplus profits to start a village fund for the benefit of the whole community. And with this unifying shared prosperity enterprise and the farmers? surplus incomes, the community will have the time and resources to strengthen their organisational capacity and equip themselves to engage with state actors.
Thirdly, the OA will then be equipped and in a position to meaningfully engage with state agencies to develop solutions to sustainably protect the environment and restore their watershed areas.

Funds for Objectives 2 and 3 have been secured. However, we have only partially secured funding for Objective 1?s goal of scaling up from 36 to 75 farmers. With funds already secured from Yayasan Hasanah and OA MGF, we will be able to scale up to 66 farmers (30 new farmers), but there is a shortfall of RM100,000 before this project can be scaled up to reach the target of 75 farmers by Dec 2021 (Note that this project proposal is part of a larger project to scale up OA participation to 100 farmers over 3 years. This longer timeframe is needed for some of the middle-term fruit trees to reach maturity as part of the agroforestry design).
