Promoting Renewable Energy Technology within the Internally Displaced Person?s Camp.
Location: Bakassi Internally Displaced Peoples Camp, Maiduguri, Borno State
This project is ongoing in its first phase of implementation in Bakassi internally displaced persons camp North East Nigeria. Baseline study showed that 95% of the project beneficiaries burn biomass for cooking and burning of harmful fuels for lighting. Energy source options for households in the camps are often limited to consuming firewood and biomass. Burning biomass is responsible for respiratory health issues faced by the users in the camp especially women and children. The project seeks to promote environmental stewardship and the adoption of renewable energy technology in the internally Displaced Persons Camp. The project has so far trained 400 beneficiaries as Eco champions, constructed and installed 30 waste recycling stations at different location on the camp, produced IEC materials and built the capacity of 200 people on Solar installation and maintenance and production of energy efficient stoves and the provision of solar lights to 150 homes providing light to least 1000 people and the production of 250 fuel wood efficient stoves in the camp. Project activities were undertaken to support government?s stabilization efforts, in restoring hope to the beneficiaries. Increasing need for energy in the camps has necessitated the need for provision of alternative and clean energy source to support the existing power source on camps.
The second phase of the project will be achieved through the following project activities: 1. Creation of awareness on the benefits of energy efficient cooking stoves; 2. Training on the production and maintenance of 500 energy efficient stoves. 3. Provision of small standalone (DC) solar system to 100 households.
