Promoting Community-Driven Reforestation and Provision of Alternative Household Clean Energy for Rural Communities in Lagos and Ogun States, Nigeria.
The first phase of the project will be conducted in Itaoluwo community in Ogun State, a border town to Ikorodu Lagos and in Oke-Oja and Owoyemi wards of Ajeromi/Ifelodun LGA, a cosmopolitan environment popularly known as Ajegunle. Assessment carried out revealed that most households in the selected communities use biomass fuels (firewood and charcoal) in traditional stove such as three-stone fireplaces and mud stoves as their main source of cooking energy. The use of biomass fuels has continued to exacerbate deforestation, erosion and flooding resulting in climate change issues including changes on weather patterns, heat waves and droughts. The project aims to expand access to affordable and clean energy from Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) as a substitute for biomass energy and also address environmental effects of energy production and use by encouraging afforestation through community driven tree planting activities. Project activities will include, but not limited to baseline assessments, advocacy campaigns with all relevant stakeholders including the government to encourage favourable energy policies in the two target states; Tree planting activity; Training and empowerment exercise on the use of LPG; introduction of a micro-credit scheme. We expect to see reduced reliance on firewood and consequent reduction in tree-cutting and deforestation based on the quantity of firewood and charcoal consumption after the project, and increase in land area, under forest cover because of tree planting and promotion of natural regeneration of vegetation
