Emede with a population of over 20,000 of which 85% are farmers and fishermen, is a low-lying land in the tropical rainforest zone with rainfall of over 1,700mm per annum and prone to annual inundation. As a result of recurring oil spillages for over 50 years and a poorly remediated massive spill in 2006 an estimated land area of >300 hectares of land have been heavily degraded/contaminated with petroleum pollutants. A pilot project by ICD (2011) on 1/2hectare in a section of the said degraded land at Emede attained Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration reduction from 40,000mg/kg to 980mg/kg within six months using phytoremediation (using higher plants from the area) technique. This is far below the Environmental Guidelines and Standards for Petroleum Industry in Nigeria (EGASPIN) requirement of 5,000mg/kg. The effectiveness of the pilot phytoremediation informed the decision to repeat the project in another site in Emede in 2017 to recover /reclaim some of the remaining degraded lands and to replicate the project in five neighbouring communities. This repeat project commenced in July 2017 and with the completion of the first milestone within a period of seven months the project recorded major achievement and created opportunities as well. The Expert meeting brought to the floor new ideas that were very useful to the project progress. It provided access to recommendations that led to the effectiveness of the selected indigenous plants used at the project site and the setting up of nursery / use of indigenous plant seed. One day project inception workshop conducted by ICD gained the buy-in of key stakeholders? e. g. Government agencies (NDDC, NCDMB) NGOs, Academia and some LGA Chairmen represented. They made various commitments of replication and inclusion in course content. However, the project could not be completed due to major challenge of delayed reporting. In light of the above, ICD was engaged to represent the proposal with the outstanding project activities with a view to attaining the objectives of the project.
