Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture to address Land Degradation and Enhance Economic Opportunities in Ogbinbiri and Ogbudugbudu in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta state.
Niger Delta occupies a strategic position in Nigeria?s economy because of its rich and abundant natural resources. It is the center of oil and gas production activities in Nigeria. However, oil exploration in the region has impacted negatively on the natural environment and its resources. Land degradation has impeded traditional farming and economic activities. Rural infrastructure, health and education in the region have long been neglected Consequently, a significant population of the region has extremely limited access to improved living conditions (including basic education, health care services, and safe drinking water) due to the absence of alternative source of income. Women and youth are the most vulnerable because they bear the brunt of underdevelopment. Women are also under-represented in decision making and leadership positions, which is an underlying factor for poverty.

The aim of the project is to promote climate smart agriculture through the planting of improved seeds and stems, practicing of organic farming, such as inter and intra cropping, fallowing, mulching, use of biological weed control, production and use of organic manure to address the challenges of land degradation thereby improving land productivity with increasing crop yield; enhancing economic and agri-business opportunities, employment generation, and sustainable environment in the two communities through establishment of cooperative groups. Emphasis will be placed on empowerment of women and youths to secure environmental, economic and political rights and become self-reliant and free from poverty, underdevelopment and dependency.
