The Niger Delta is a densely populated region called the Oil Rivers because it was once a major producer of palm oil. The area was the British Oil Rivers Protectorate from 1885 until 1893. It is an oil-rich region, and has been the centre of international controversy over devastating pollution and ecocide, and human rights violations. The Niger Delta extends over about 70,000 km² and makes up 7.5% of Nigeria's land mass. Some 31 million people of more than 40 ethnic groups speaking about 250 different dialects are among the inhabitants of the Niger Delta. Oil exploration in the region has impacted negatively on the natural resources and environment. Oil spills on the water and land degradation have either killed or driven aquatic lives out of the reach of local fishermen hence removing the source of livelihood of the riverine communities. Rural/riverine infrastructure, including basic education, health care services, and safe drinking water in the region are lacking resulting in limited access to improved living conditions and hence poverty. Women and youth are the hard hit of these challenges because they are underrepresented in decision making and leadership positions, which is exacerbating poverty. The aim of this project is to contribute to employment generation, national food basket and sustainable environment in the target communities with emphasis on women and youth as beneficiaries. The project will establish poultry and fish farms, strengthen existing cooperative groups through alternative livelihood and income generating activities and capacity building. It is expected that this project will empower women and youths to secure environmental, economic and political rights; become self-reliant and free from poverty, underdevelopment and dependency.
