Livelihoods and Sustainable Mariculture (Spiny Lobster and Sea Moss Training) in Savannes Bay, Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia.

The grantee wishes to develop a sustainable aquaculture lobster project which helps to create employment for young people and contributes to food security in Saint Lucia. The project will help the group acquire a lease of the seabed, prepare a management plan, conduct a estaqblish a water quality monitoring system and appropriate training.

It is anticipated that a Full Grant Project Proposal will be submitted for project implementation at the end of this stage of the project cycle.

Notable Community Participation

This project was designed by youth for youth to address the high unemployment that exist in Saint Lucia among youth (>45%). It is expected that the capacity of those involved will increase significantly.

Linkages gef projects

We are hoping to link the FG with the Medium Sized GEF proposal for the South East Coast of Saint Lucia. Negotiaitons will commence soon.

Project Results

This project is the first experimental project in coastal mariculture for SGP Saint Lucia. Two major reports were completed as part of the project: (i) Review of the Economic and Practical Aspects of Aquaculture; (ii) the Situational Assessment of Spiny Lobster and Seamoss Farming; and (iii) Results from Water Quality Tests (CARPHA). The incomplete activities are the negotiations for a seabed lease, granting of the least and the receipt of co-funding letters.

During project implementation two men and one woman was employed as consultants and paid a total of US$2407.

In terms of participation, more women (7) participated in meetings than men (4). Overall, the COVID-19 pandemic affected the level of participation with the restrictions that were in place.
The output of that PG was a FG project proposal for funding and implementation.
