Center of Geographic Information Systems for local communities? sustainable development and ecological safety
The main goal of the project is to raise ecological safety and sustainable development of local communities through the launch of a national platform for processing space information using geographic information systems (GIS). To achieve this goal, the project will establish a Center of Geographic Information Systems (GIS Center), serving as a platform for data collection, analysis and monitoring of environmental information for management decisions, including local authorities, united territorial communities, in cooperation with civil society organizations and community representatives. The Centre's activities will be an important contribution to the realization of human rights regarding access to information, public participation in decision-making and access to justice in environmental issues. Moreover, the initiative will introduce a pilot project on GIS planning and monitoring for particular region, provide information and methodological support to local governments and communities to form plans for environmental development of territories and ensure their environmental safety, as well as conduct trainings, conferences and roundtable discussions. In addition, an open course on GIS will developed and launched. The project has a strong governmental support and cooperation with the State Ecological Academy and other scientific and educational institutions, local authorities and CSOs networks.
