Consultation on the Climate Science, Convention on the Rights of Persons
with Disabilities (CRPD), Disability Data Consolidating advocacy trip to
the three Northern Islands of Tuvalu, Nanumea, Nanumaga and Niutao
The project focus to address
(i) The delivering of climate science to disabilities and to explain their contribution to the
changing climate
(ii) The understanding of the public interpreting the Convention on the rights of persons
with disabilities (CRPD) to take care of Persons with disabilities during environment
disasters and the roles disabilities should play during disasters.
(iii) The collecting of data on disabilities to supplement the existing report which have gaps
to close
The key environment problem is to raise the knowledge of disabilities on issue related to climate
change and sea level rise. The knowledge gain will be useful to prepare disabilities on the numerous
consultations in Tuvalu on adaptation options that will save Tuvalu and eventually the world at
large. Giving them the knowledge will pull them out of their usual comfort zone and educate them
on the contribution they should render to their families in support on the community effort to
address climate change
Secondly, the understanding of disabilities on their rights and the understanding of the public on
the rights of disabilities is crucial for the welfare of the country. Tuvalu ratified the CRPD in 2013
and it has not understand in the outer islands. Funafuti, the capital where most of the consultation
are done, shows a great improvement on the treatment of disabilities.
Lastly, is the closing of gaps on the report that was done in 2017. Sample work is not enough to
capture the reality of disabilities and we are the only Organisation (Fusi Alofa) that should work
on improving the data that will be used to assess the assistance needed.
The propose approach will be to travel to the outer islands and conduct consultation on the three
islands on the regular shipping schedule or to hire a boat and spend three days on each island
depending on the cost to fall within the budget.
The consultation will be for the whole island communities, then to Primary School pupils and
disabilities on the island.

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
Both men and women will be involved in the project. Not only a balance of both genders will be involved in the facilitation of the project, but even the invited audience to the workshops in the outer islands will be geared towards balancing the number of male and females attending the workshops.
This goal of involving a balance of males and females in the number of invited audiences was to get the required information to both gender at a single delivery.
Planning non gef grant
Likewise, there is no intention for the project to be up scaled using no-GEF grants.
