Addressing the Water Quality Issues Faced in the Soufriere Watershed and the Soufriere Bay by Strengthening Policies, Water Quality Monitoring and Fostering Community Awareness.
This project will revise the legal instruments which gives the grantee management authority and legal authority to manage fishing operations in the SMMA. The project objectives are: (i) to review and re-draft the by-laws of the association which will strengthen the legislative mandate of the SMMA Inc. to sustainably manage the marine resources within the Soufriere water shed; (ii) to develop by-laws in accordance with the Fisheries Act to regulate the conduct of fishing operations; (iii) to develop and implement a monitoring System for Coral Reef Eco-systems; (iv) to implement a permanent water quality monitoring system as the basis for effective natural resource management in Soufriere; (v) to conduct an educational drive to bring awareness to the effect of poor water quality practices; and (vi) to design, fabricate and install billboards to sensitize the public of the impact of poor disposal practices.

Is is expected that the Saint Lucian Kweyol language will be used to communicate the education messages from the project.
Notable Community Participation
It is expected that youth will be involved in the extensive education programme of the project, by inviting them to implement activities and become marine managment ambassadors.
