Engaging Youth in Klang Valley in Organic Farming and Menus: A Farm to Table Value Chain Approach for green job creation
The agriculture sector is one of the major contributors to the economy and livelihood of the people. At the same time agriculture practices impact the conservation of biodiversity and increase pressure on soil degradation and climate change. Various policies and plans are developed across the world to reduce these impacts by governments and international development organizations. One of the options increasingly encouraged is the use of organic farming to counter negative impact of industrial agriculture.
The project intends to build the capacity of youth in Malaysia to involve in organic farming and create more sustainable employment/livelihood in the long run. Organic farming is already well practiced in Malaysia and the awareness of the consumers on these produces and the benefits are also increasing. Another, socio-economic problem that is happening now in Malaysia is the high unemployment of youth. This is compounded by the impact of COVID19 crises. The project intends to encourage employment of the youth in sustainable agriculture by providing skills training and relevant practical training on organic farming. The approach is to expose these youth to the technic and practice of organic farming, processing, marketing and networking with other farmers, retailers and consumers. The project?s aim is to create interest and livelihood for youth in organic agriculture through a value chain approach.
