Manjung Green Initiatives
Manjung Green Initiatives
Northern Manjung have many important biodiversity spots including turtle landing site, highly biodiverse coastal hill forest, important national and state tourism site, and pristine mangrove forest which important for the local fisherman catchment. However for the past 20 years many approval of unsustainable development project such as sand mining, commercial logging, quarrying, mangrove felling for aquaculture, industrial development, reclamation and shipping activities on the coastline which had destroyed the pristine biodiversities.

This is because, despite most of the area were zoned as Environmental Sensitive Area (ESA), at the state level those areas were not fully gazetted as protected areas by the state government. Up until now, the mentioned ESAs still prone to and threatened by unsustainable development activitie. Without any proactive action to conserve and legally protect the area - this will give more adverse consequence to the coastal beach especially on the narrowing of turtle landing sites, water contamination, loss of habitat & species in the area - thus lead to extinction and ecosystem destruction.

Therefore, this project will focus on series of initiatives to conserve and protect the environmental sensitive site for a long term. The proposed activities including to organize series of mangrove & coastal forest conservation program, turtle rehabilitation, environmental awareness festival, advocacy and campaign towards establishment of new protected areas in Northern Manjung, Perak.

Ultimately, the project will give significant result towards gazettement of new protected areas in Northern Manjung, involving all level of communities in conservation, strengthening the capacity of the youth, local communities and public through empowerment, awareness and environmental education - thus in overall strengthening the environmental stewardship in Northern Manjung.

Action: To conduct of series of coastal forest conservation through tree planting, beach clean up - environmental awareness talk and turtle rehabilitation program
Rational:

i. Tree planting for reforestation along the beach would be needed to control coastal erosion, rehabilitate the degraded coastal forest and the most important thing this action will gives significant result towards rehabilitation of turtle landing site especially by planting the Ambong-Ambong trees (Scaevola taccada) - which able to attract turtle landing for its ability to cooling the beach sand for essential egg laying site (research proven by the Department of Fisheries).

ii. Conservation of the green turtle which currently are endangered s which comprises efforts on collecting the egg, re-hatching of the egg and release it back to the sea is important. Under this project, we will focus on doing turtle release program at the same time involving volunteers.

iii. The proposed beach site will be more cleaner and well maintained from human made pollution - thus serving essential area for turtle landing site

iv. We also propose to conduct series education program to foster environmental awareness among the local coastal communities, youth and other public member as this place is the best for field conservation and environmental education initiatives which public can involves.

Action: To conduct series of mangrove forest conservation program
Rational:

i. For the Northern Manjung issues, an initiatives to protect, conserve and preserve the pristine the mangrove ecosystem and the coastal area is crucial in order to provide a strong natural safeguards, ensuring seafood security, ecosystem resilient and maintaining the socioeconomy of the local especially the fisherman.

ii. Mangrove tree planting activities will address many problem such as providing effective mitigation controlfrom land erosion, land degradation, climate control and natural disaster/catastrophe and provide a healthy ecosystem for marine resources especially for the local fisherman catch on fish, crab, shrip and other crustaceans.

iii. The degraded coastal and mangrove forest will be enriched and rehabilitated and more tree covers will occupied the proposed conservation location

Action: To conduct series of environmental festival to foster awareness among the youth and local communities in the in Manjung town
Rational:
i. The coastal community and youth group will well aware and educated on on marine ecology knowledge, coastal ecosystem, turtle conservation and general environmental awareness among the youth and public.

ii. Increase awareness & education - especially knowledge on urban solid waste management, marine ecology, coastal ecosystem, turtle conservation and general environmental awareness among the communities, youth and public.

iii. Public awareness were fostered through hands on conservation, solid waste management, education, training, and capacity development for Manjung local communities, youth and other forest dependant communties and also to supporting protection and conservation campaigns.

iv. All level of society involved in conservation of coastal ecosystem & marine biodiversity especially involvement of grassroot communities and youth thus this effort can help to mainstreaming biodiversity conservation and sustainable management of natural resources in mitigating and adaptation to climate change at the local level

Action: To campaign for the gazettement of Segari Melintang forest as a state park, gazettement of turtle landing site and other environmental sensitive site as protected areas
Rational:
i. The gazettement of Segari as a State park, turtle landing site, mangrove forest and other sensitive area as a protected area will cast a safety net around the important and endangered species populations found within Segari.

ii. The gazettement will provide long-term protection or 'security of tenure' to species of flora and fauna in Segari Melintang through more stringent governance, enforcement and regulation where it prohibits all destructive activities such as logging, plantations, mining, quarries, other unsustainable industries and development.
iii. The gazettement also will ensure long-going survival of local threatened and endangered species such as White Balau (Shorea lumutensis), Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and Sea Resak (Vatica cinerea)

iv. Threats to habitat and its species reduced, and such the viability of the remaining endangered species will be increased.
