Apiculture and Biodiversity ? A Nexus for Sustainable Development in rural sections of seven GEF SGP UNDP countries (Dominica; Grenada; Saint Kitts & Nevis; Saint Lucia; Samoa; and Trinidad and
Tobago).
This project is an example of South-South Collaboration with seven GEF SGP countries from the Eastern and South-Eastern Caribbean, and Samoa in the Pacific, coming together to share information, knowledge and skills in Apiculture. Led by Saint Lucia with the most advanced apiculture sector, the islands of Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa and Trinidad and Tobago agreed to implement this strategic project with the following goal: to establish an Apiculture Industry in Saint Lucia and identify and develop clear Pathways towards the development of the same in six Caribbean and one Pacific Country. The smart objectives are as follows: (i) to establish an efficient and effective knowledge management system which is built on accurate baseline and diagnostic studies for planning and management; (ii) to design and implement a capacity development inter-island programme which meets the needs of each island where they are in the Apiculture Industry continuum or value chain; (iii) to build a resilient climate smart production, processing and manufacturing system which is based on local and/or regional ownership and management of the backward and forward linkages in Apiculture; (iv) to identify and establish one protected area in Saint Lucia and/or improve management of one protected area in each country for the improvement in nature conservation and sustainable use. (v) to design, equip and establish a R & I programme for the benefit of all SGP Countries; (vi) to design and implement a national, regional and international marketing plan for the sustainable development of the Apiculture Industry; (vii) to design and implement a communications, public awareness and education programme which is specific to different stakeholders and population cohorts; (viii) to review and improve existing policies and legislation in all participating countries which will assist in improving the enabling environment for the growth and sustainable development of the Apiculture Industry; and (ix) to establish a formative and summative evaluation system which will enable the preparation of a comprehensive evaluation of the entire project as a means of documenting and sharing the lessons learned.
Finally, the anticipated project outputs are as follows: (i) Situational Analysis known, understood, and serves as the basis for planning and management; (ii) Countries? capacity improved by training at least
1300 persons; (iii) Sustainable livelihood enterprises functioning optimally; (iv) Management effectiveness of newly established and existing protected areas improved significantly from the establishment of appropriate structures and systems and viable livelihood options; (v) Sustainable R & I programme operational; (vi) Significant market penetration at all levels (50% increase); (vii) New Industry known and supported by communities and the policy makers; (viii) Government support is enshrined and tangible; (ix) timely interventions are made to avoid project pitfalls and
Lessons identified and shared with partners; and (x) efficient and accountable project management structures and systems.
