Project Results
- The project beneficiary - Nematulie Kafoo is a women led local Community based Organisation in the village of Keneba in the Lower River Region and has a membership of 110 members all of whom are women. As a marginalized group within the society, the group will benefit greatly by uplifting their economic and social status through this project.
- Following the start of project activities in early January 2021, project activities were successfully implemented as scheduled for the 1st quarter 2021 geared towards improving the livelihood of its member under the theme ?Adaptation to the Impact of Environmental Degradation and Loss of Biodiversity in attaining food and income security?.
- The following activities were planned and implemented:
1. Construction of a two and a half hectare Fence for the garden by the women group members has been completed. The garden will have 3 major components as activities; namely (a). Vegetable production; (b) Bee keeping and ; (c) Poultry production. The land was negotiated by the women and the villagers, and the village authorities through the Village head, allocated the lad on the outskirts of the village to the grantee.
2. Construction of a Borehole was successfully completed. The borehole will provide a sage and reliable source of water for all the project components but mainly for vegetable production - which is the main component of the project.Th rest of the work on the borehole which will include connecting the borehole to the 2 water tanks and the 8 distribution reservoirs and the installation of solar panels for water pumping, will be completed through the use of the 2nd disbursement grant.
3. Training of 40 members on Vegetable, Horticulture Gardening and compost making 1st Batch was completed. The selected members underwent the vital elements of vegetable production suh as seedbed preparation, sowing techniques, water techniques, transplanting methods, care and management of young seedlings, etc. Also covered during he training was composting preparation- as the scheme would rely entirely on natural/organic methods of enhancing soil fertility in an attempt to phase out/minimize the use of agrochemicals. It was estimated that the garden amounting to 2 and 1/2 hectare produced about 120 kg of manure that substituted and eliminated the use of 2, 000 kg of chemical fertilizers.
4. Procurement of Vegetable Seeds completed and distributed among the group members as starter seed capital for the initial production phase of the project. In subsequent seasons, the group would have to cater for their input needs on their own.
5. Garden Implements procured and handed over for use in the next quarter
6. Training of 14 members on Bee Keeping was initiated and successfully completed. Bee keeping would generate income, conserve biodiversity and enhance crop production through bee pollination, thus achieving synergy between the different components of the project.
7. At the completion of the bee keeping training, Five (5) bee hives have been installed in one end of the garden.
8. Construction of Poultry House was also initiated and hope to be completed one the 2nd grant payment is received.
9. in anticipation for the start of the poultry production activities, training of the group n Poultry production was also initiated and completed. Fifteen (15) members of the group successfully underwent this training.
