Restoration of drained peatlands in Belarus
Project goal: reducing the impact of climate change on sustainable economic development and protecting the welfare and health of the country's population
Project tasks:
- Restoration of at least 3,000 hectares of drained peatlands in the Kalinkovichi and Khoiniki districts of the Gomel region;
- Assessment of ??2 emissions/removals for restored peatlands in Kalinkovichi and Khoiniki districts of Gomel region;
- Creation of a system for monitoring, forecasting and early warning of fires in peatlands in Kalinkovichi and Khoiniki districts of the Gomel region;
- Raising awareness of the population and decision-makers on issues related to degraded lands;
- Raising awareness of the local population of the project region about the problem of climate change and restoration of degraded lands.
Expected results:
- annual reduction of CO2 emissions by 33,600 tons due to the ecological rehabilitation of more than 3,000 hectares of drained peatlands. In addition, the implementation of the project will contribute to improving gender participation in project activities and empowering men and women to participate in decision-making and actions aimed at improving the environmental and socio-economic situation in the project region.
