Combating land degradation, preserving biological diversity and reducing greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions through the introduction of innovative methods of fighting forest fires in the Cherikov district of the Mogilev region
Project goal: combating the degradation of forest / land resources, improving the situation with the conservation of biological diversity and countering climate change in the Republic of Belarus.
Project tasks: 1. Purchase of modern equipment for extinguishing forest fires for the needs of the State Forestry Institution "Cherikov Forestry".
2. Organizing a seminar-training to train the staff of the State Forestry Institution "Cherikov Forestry" on new innovative methods of fighting forest fires.
3. Carrying out a series of round tables and seminars in educational institutions and village councils of the Cherikov district of the Mogilev region to raise awareness of the local population on forest fire prevention (given the epidemiological situation, these events can be carried out remotely).
4. Practical use, generalization and dissemination in other regions of the country of the experience of the State Forestry Institution "Cherikov Forestry" on the operation of equipment and the use of innovative methods for extinguishing forest fires in the project area.
5. Creation of videos on the operation of innovative equipment for extinguishing forest fires and to raise the awareness of the local population on forest fire prevention.
6. Conducting an information campaign in the media to prevent the causes of forest fires and popularize the results of the project.
7. Ensuring balanced and equal participation of women and men in the implementation of project activities.
Expected results:
- Reduction of the area of land degraded by forest fires in the project area.
- Reduction of CO2 emissions due to faster and more efficient elimination of forest fires in the project area.
- Improving the social and economic conditions of the local population.
- Increasing the efficiency of the State Forestry Institution "Cherikov forestry" in terms of operational extinguishing and liquidation of the consequences of forest fires.
- Minimization of damage caused during the elimination of forest fires to the environment.
- Dissemination of project implementation experience to other regions of the country.
- Ensuring balanced and equal participation of women and men in the implementation of project activities.
- Raising awareness of the local community on the prevention and control of forest fires, combating land degradation and improving the state of biological diversity

Cherikov forestry planned to scale up the projects results by purchasing of 2 more sets of SFPC with the state funds by 20225.
Project sustainability
The project is sustainable because the purchased equipment is on the balance sheet of the forestry, whose employees prevent fires and extinguish any fires in the forests. Ensuring fire safety and prompt elimination of fires in the forest fund has a positive effect on the state of the environment and, consequently, on the health of 13,965 residents of the Cherikov region.
