We recycle WEEE and achieve SDGs
The informational era in which we all live, including the Republic of Moldova, due to fast digitalization, cheaper and faster Internet access, electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) that becomes cheaper from one year to another, increased purchasing power of the population, represents the driver of the increase in the level of consumption of EEE in households and in the business environment. More and more appliances are present in every household in the Republic of Moldova, and the terms of their use is considerably short, which makes them faster WEEE.
About 10,000 tons of electrical and electronic equipment waste (WEEE) are generated annually in the Republic of Moldova, and according to the Study on the generation and management of e-waste in Chisinau, top obstacles to WEEE collection are insufficient information on waste collection and recycling and lack of WEEE collection infrastructure. Taken together they bring an enormous burden on the environment - if of course they are not managed sustainably.
Based on the results of the study conducted by A.O. Association for Waste Recovery in 2019 and directly the results and impact of the project implemented with the support of the Small Grants Program Gef SGP Moldova, A.O. EcoDigital considers it important to ensure the continuity of the results obtained and directly expand the number of beneficiaries of the project with access to information and WEEE collection points, thus directly contributing to the achievement of at least eight Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with no. 3, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 15 and 17. Thus, we intend to expand the WEEE collection infrastructure by creating new collection points (72 points), thus allowing to ensure the inhabitants of the Republic of Moldova with the only and most large WEEE collection network - 200 WEEE collection points (minimum one point in each District Center).
With the expansion of the WEEE collection network and the direct increase in the number of people informed and involved in the management of this hazardous waste, it will be possible to reduce the level of contamination of the environment with hazardous chemicals, but also the risk of exposure to various diseases in line with GEF SGP Country Strategy Initiative 3 (Local to Global Coalitions for Chemicals and Waste Management).
The beneficiaries of the project will be the institutions representing the public sector (LPA), including on request and / or through the selection method, economic agents, educational institutions, NGOs, etc.
An important component of the project is the Education and Awareness of the population and the promotion of the REPAIR principle, according to the best world practices, which allows the prolongation of the life of the equipment. As a planned action in this regard is the arrangement of a laboratory class within the College of Ecology - WEEE class, which will be equipped with various samples of WEEE, which will allow the study and visualization in detail of the types of materials they are composed of (plastic , metal, electronics, etc.). The laboratory will be used as a space for organizing WEEE repair workshops and various information sessions / workshops.
Through all the activities planned for a period of 12 months, the project aims at a more active involvement of the population not only from Chisinau, but from the whole country, each of the districts having access to information, points and local collection campaigns organized with the support of authorized operators, project partners which will lead to educating the correct habits.
