Young Environmental Advocates Initiative for Bhutan
This project addresses two key focus of youth inclusion and the increasing plastic waste in our community. Firstly, young people makes more than 50 % of Bhutanese population and they must be actively and adequately involved in environmental decision making processes. They have potential to be part of innovative nature-based solution, advocate for policies such as green procurement system, be part of global voice to fight against climate change and biodiversity crisis that is threatening the whole existence today. This will be possible provided they have equal platforms, access to resources and their effort are recognized by the society. This mean that both the benefits and burden of environment have to be equally shared across the generations. Young actors in the area of environment has no equal or adequate access to socio-culture resources to advance their efforts in driving the change. Thus, Involving, including, engagement and recognizing the effort of young actors and leaders in combating environmental challenges will help in building sustainable effort and behaviours for environmental protection, conservation and waste management. We see GEF ? SGP funding window as one of the sources of fostering, protecting, convening, a platform and support for young environmental actors to amplify their voices and advance their engagement on environmental issues.
Secondly Plastic waste has increasingly become one of the highest types of waste going to landfill and off late ban of export have affected many waste handlers in exporting the waste material. We must expect and prepare for worse scenario that may come with change in policy to stop import of waste from other countries by India government which is already under the radar of Indian policymaker. Therefore, upcycling of plastic waste is one of the sustainable solutions to reduce plastic waste going to landfill. The existing waste handlers are mostly young people and they are faced with multi facets of difficulties from lack of enabling policy support to access of financial schemes. No CSOs and public organizations collaborate with them to share resources and forge mutual partnership in tackling waste issues. This project brings the new partnership model based on social entrepreneurship concept in creating better condition for young actors in waste management area to increase their impact and outcome. This model of partnership will encourage many public organisation and youths to partner to drive innovative change for better environment.
