Greening Kribi (I&II): Household Access to Low Carbon Technology, LED Bulbs and Solar Panels
Greening Kribi (I&II): Household Access to Low Carbon Technology, LED Bulbs and Solar Panels
Kribi I and Kribi II have been dangerously hit by climate change, resulting to irregular rain falls and high tides. The effects of climate change are as a result of household and industrial GHG emissions, increased deforestation, poor waste management and many more climate unjust practises. Kribi I and Kribi II struggles to cope with hard times in its fishing industry and the weather is also hitting tourism, simultaneously threatening to destroy the 2 main sources of income. Statistics from Kribi?s city council recorded a massive drop in tourist visits by 60% in 2015. As the climate keeps having adverse effects on the main sources of income, women and youth tend to be more susceptible to gender based violence and sexual exploitation, exposing them to STI?Sand HIV/AIDS. This project seeks to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change by promoting clean energy, ecotourism and green economy. It has as its global objective to reduce the impact of climate change on the municipality of Kribi by committing the inhabitants to reduce in a sustainable manner its greenhouse gas emission (GHG) from communities operations and with its specific objectives to establish Kribi?s Carbon footprint for 2021 and 2022 using environmental management tool(EMT), to contribute to lowering GHG emissions by 30% by 2022 as a means of mitigating global warming by providing affordable and sustainable solar electrification to 38 low income households. Some activities to meet the objectives of the project will be to assess and publish Kribi I and Kribi II?s carbon footprint for 2021 and 2022, install solar panels in 38 homes, organize workshops on the promotion of entrepreneurship and gender equality, broadcasting of weekly radio programs and providing start up capital for eco-friendly businesses to women and youth to improve on their livelihood. YouthFORCE as a youth focused organisation is well placed to pilot this initiative as it understands women and youth perspectives and has prior experience in Youth Empowerment, Community IEC and Advocacy Projects.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
As a youth organization, one of our primary targets is working with youth as instrumental agents of change. From the initial stage of the project design, YouthFORCE carried out an informal baseline survey to understand the needs of young people in Kribi I and Kribi II. This helped shape the project design which was carried out together with the youth population. Young people in our our scope of work are primary beneficiaries of the project, they are benefiting 40% of all project activities and will be actively involved in the execution of the project. They will also be trained as experts who will motor the project sustainability after the project comes to a close, some of the trainings and community outreach programs will be facilitated by the youth of Kribi I and Kribi II.
Gender Focus
Our indicators have been disaggregated on basis of gender and age. Women and youth are primary beneficiaries of their role as energy users, food providers and managers. It will also give equality in the ability to generate disposable income and to reduce female dependence on their male counterparts. Nevertheless, the project isn?t gender insensitive because men have also been taken into account to benefit by 20% of the project activities. The youth population benefitting from this project will comprise of 50% girls and 50% boys
