Replicating Innovative climate-smart agroecological good practices across the Kong Traditional area of Ghana

This project seeks to mobilize young organic climate-smart innovative farmers into networks as smallholder investors, to support a transition to boost agroecology, strengthens local institutions for self-determination, facilitates a higher level of aggregation and diversify agricultural production and marketing of organic products; b) develop the capacities of these farmers as farmer-entrepreneurs to learn cultivation and propagation practices for alternative crops, integrated local business people to incorporate in small ruminant production for the animal; c) upscale the establishment of Rural Support to Service Centres to serve as increased farmers access to services that support small scale business to improve access to organic fertilizers, seeds, technical advice, renewable energy, storage, microcredit, insurance; and d) facilitate access to technologies and transformational processes, through communications and access to information technologies; and increased access to knowledge that will promote integrated research development and share learning through exchange field visits, SMS, and other Apps especially in the era of covid-19 (Global Pandemic

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

A range of species, including the signature species dawadawa, shea, baobab, mahogany, rosewood, cashew, mangoes, etc will provide improved soil fertility, fodder, wood and fuel, and a variety of fruits and foods, thereby diversifying farmers? incomes and providing alternatives to famine in case of drought.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

JAKSALLY will constitute a project implementation team (PIMT); Representatives from Municipal Assembly, Community Development and Social welfare, Youth Association, Traditional Queen Mothers? Association, and Chiefs, Community radio, FBOs, women groups, and the Religious. The other CSOs from the region will also do the same in their respective project areas. The PIMT will ensure all minority groups participate appropriately and their views are taken into consideration. That is, PIMT shall hold monthly, quarterly, and annual feedback meetings. This feedbacks will support project management and communication, as well as bringing out innovations. The University will facilitate institutional capacity building, knowledge sharing based on the social and action research that will be conducted. The knowledge will be used for policy influencing and scale-up interventions.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

PIMT shall hold monthly, quarterly, and annual feedback meetings. This feedbacks will support project management and communication, as well as projecting climate-smart innovations. The media will be used to promote knowledge gained through exchanges, replication, and broader adoption of proven technologies and good practices in agroecology and climate-smart agriculture among smallholder farmers. Virtual meetings will be encouraged, and be used to ensure that all project stories are projected locally and internationally.

Capacity - Building Component

The project will use innovative Climate-smart agriculture that seeks to increase sustainable productivity, strengthen farmers? resilience, reduce agriculture?s greenhouse gas emissions and increase carbon sequestration. It will strengthen local food security and deliver environmental benefits. It will include proven practical techniques ? such as mulching, intercropping, conservation agriculture, crop rotation, integrated crop-livestock management, agroforestry, improved grazing, and improved water management ? and innovative practices such as better weather forecasting, more resilient food crops and risk insurance. The project will mitigate and adapt Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) is a low-cost land restoration technique used to combat poverty and hunger among poor subsistence farmers by increasing food and timber production and resilience to climate extremes.

Notable Community Participation

The stakeholders (Youth Association, Traditional Leaders/Queen Mothers? Association, Galamsey miners? groups, Paramountcy and sub-Chiefs, Community radio managers, FBOs, women?s leaders and the religious, media, common interest groups, etc) in over 25 communities will participate at a different level of the project. If this is done well, then: - Gender and Youth Mainstreaming issues will be catered for in the project; - Local people contributions will be factored into the project strategies; and - Poverty eradication among the targeted groups will be reduced.

Project Results

ACTIVITIES DONE AT THE FIRST QUARTER

Conduction of a meeting which comprises the stakeholders in order to create awareness and preparedness for project intervention. Community social mobilization and ecological governance interventions. There was an introduction of Community Livelihood Savings and revolving-Loans (CLSL) scheme as a sustainability strategy to improve the financial status of the community. Social enterprise community-supported agriculture network at the district level was formed and organization of coaching and mentoring session for CSOs in project communities, Promoting community dialogues and advocacy, where community members are advised on the effects of farming with illegal chemicals, and also an agreement was made between the Fulani herdsmen and farmers to protect the farmlands from cattle grazing. The women of the community were involved in decision-making and allocation of farmlands

16. 20 youth, 260 ACUSAs, 30 women and 10 men are undergoing coaching and mentoring

Activities planned but not completed in this reporting period and reasons for the delay

All activities planned for the reporting period were undertaken and achieved, except the construction of borehole for Kong and Konfaala communities.

Activities planned to be completed in the next reporting period.

1. Support 150 smallholder farmers to invest in proven technologies in agroecology and climate-smart agriculture as business enterprises

2. Use the establishment of community seed banks and household seed storage systems to scale up

3.Construct one borehole each in Konfaala and Kong

1. We must be bold to fight environmental issues

2. Minimize corruption and environmental issues will stop.

6. The succession process for land tenure should be in place

7. In conflict resolution, if one don?t have the power to enforce a threat, threat shouldn't be issued.
