Sustainable water management and community-driven ecosystem approach promotion and improvement in Chernigiv region

The project is aimed at developing capacities of local communities and increasing the level of competence among local authorities on the rational use and protection of water resources, quality improvements of water bodies and drinking water, as well as implementing community-led ecosystem approach. Specific objective of the project is the development of recommendations for rationalization of the water bodies? usage for particular united territorial community and practical activities for the water resources quality improvement. Second project component is devoted to the development of the methodological basis for the introduction of natural-artificial bio-ameliorative complex for the prevention of biological threats to aquatic ecosystems. Finally, the project will conduct a wide information campaign to raise social responsibility of local authorities, level of environmental education and awareness of local authorities and public on the issues of rational use of water resources, safe drinking water supply, modern wastewater treatment technologies and sustainable ecosystem management.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Methodology recommendations on the introduction of natural-artificial bioameliorative complex in water bodies developed, 300 copies printed and distributed among the participants of trainings and other social events of the project.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project implementation and dissemination of its results contribute to ensuring the rational use of water resources and their protection, preservation of biodiversity based on the innovative technology of natural-artificial bioamelioration of water bodies, increasing accessibility to and sustainable management of water resources and sanitation.

Gender Focus

The project in the course of its implementation followed a gender approach, based on the principles of a tolerant society, on mutual respect, equal rights and opportunities for any gender, where the level of professionalism, and not gender, plays the main role. However, the majority of project participants are women. 405 women (59.4% of the total number of participants) and 277 men (40.6% of the total number of participants) were involved in the project implementation, while 201 women and 182 men (52,5% and 47,5% of the total number of participants, respectively) participated in the project training programs.

Replication of project activities

The replication and use of the project results after its completion will be ensured through continuation of the project partners? activities, provision of consultations on the implementation of the project results in the territories of other communities, dissemination of Methodology recommendations on the introduction of natural-artificial bioameliorative complex in water bodies of various types, and implementation of the Resolution of the Conference (round table) on the rational use and protection of water resources. The informational and educational materials, developed as part of the project, and the training program for the course on the rational use and protection of water resources, ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water resources and sanitation will be used by the State Ecological Academy of Postgraduate Education and Management in conducting professional development courses for civil servants and officials of local self-government bodies.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The socio-economic effect of the project implementation is the development of a program for introduction of the natural-artificial bioameliorative complex of water bodies, identification of water ecology problems in the territory of the Parafiivka settlement united territorial community, and development of recommendations on practical measures to solve them. The project implementation and dissemination of its results contribute to ensuring the rational use of water resources and their protection, preservation of biodiversity based on the innovative technology of natural-artificial bioamelioration of water bodies, increasing accessibility to and sustainable management of water resources and sanitation.

Project Results

1. Targeted program ?On the protection of environment, environmental assessment and management of the territory of settlements, that are part of the Parafiivka united territorial community in Ichnia rayon of Chernihiv oblast? developed.
2. Methodology recommendations on the introduction of natural-artificial bioameliorative complex in water bodies developed, 300 copies printed and distributed among the participants of trainings and other social events of the project.
3. Program for the introduction of natural-artificial bioameliorative complex of water bodies in the Parafiivka UTC developed.
4. Training program for the course on the rational use and protection of water resources, ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water resources and sanitation, and preservation of biodiversity, taking into account, in particular, the urgent issues of liquidating the consequences of military invasion of the russian federation in Ukraine regarding water use, drinking water supply and biodiversity, developed and tested; 383 representatives of territorial communities, oblast and rayon state administrations, nature reserves and the State Environmental Inspectorate completed individual training modules of the program.
5. Proposal made to use mobile pumping modular stations (MPS) to satisfy the population's need for a quality standard drinking water during wartime.
6. Raising awareness of about 682 people ensured through organization and holding of scientific and practical conferences and conducting trainings.
7. 4 scientific and practical conferences organized and held; raising awareness of communities? representatives ensured; experience regarding sustainable management of ecosystems and water resources replicated at the national and international levels; as a result, 4 collections of conference paper abstracts published.
8. More than 10 partnerships with government officials, public figures, scientists, media, etc. established.
9. 2 papers prepared as part of scientific and practical conference publications.
10. About 7 publications posted on the partners' websites.
11. In the course of the project implementation, more than 8 partnerships developed with representatives of the Parafiivka settlement united territorial community in Ichnia rayon of Chernihiv oblast, the State Ecological Academy of Postgraduate Education and Management, Chernihiv Oblast organization of the Ukraine Nature Conservation Society, the Yelanetskyi Steppe Nature Reserve, Mykolayiv Oblast Council, Chernihiv Oblast Council, representatives of the State Water Resources Agency, LLC "ECOBEREG LTD" and LLC "Institute of Municipal Infrastructure", the All-Ukrainian non-government organization "Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs", and non-government organization "Foundation for the Development of Wastewater Treatment Technologies".
