Strengthening conservation and building community value of natural resources, through Ashton water catchment refurbishment, establishment of a community park and increasing capacity for protection of the Union Island gecko.
All of the Grenadine islands are vulnerable to drought, which is becoming more severe. There is a constant decrease in rainfall and noticeable extension in recent years of the dry season from January to September. The farming activities have been reduced drastically and in some cases, are non-existent due to the lack of water. The situation is becoming more difficult with the prevalent impact of climate change. As a result of frequent water shortage, the following have become evident:
- Potential adverse impact on public health
- Increased pressure on poor and low income families who experience considerable hardship in coping with water shortages
- Increased pressure on public and private sectors to adopt ?coping strategies? that are not cost-effective in the medium to long-term
- Limitations on potential economic development of the islands, especially in servicing and attracting tourism investment.
The objectives of the project are:
1. To provide alternative sources of water by refurbishment of the Ashton catchment and pipe work improve access of water for the community by December 2021.
2. To increase public awareness and education through the establishment of the community park in recognition of the Cultural Folks Law and history of Union Island by December 2021.
3. To build capacity for the rangers to highlight the importance of the Union Island Gecko, its forest habitat and their preservation by 2022.
