Growth and Sustainability of Beekeeping in SVG
There are insufficient hives to meet the production demand, there is a shortage of Queens and a limited capacity to produce Queens and there is a high start-up cost which serves as a deterrent for new beekeepers. Additionally, the organization?s office does not have the suitable equipment to proper manage its affairs which has resulted in weak functioning of critical areas such as marketing, networking, registration of beekeepers, issuance of membership cards and other administrative functions. The association is also faced with a setback to product diversification due to lack of training.
The objectives of the project are:
1. To increase honey production to at least 2100 gallons per year within the next 2 and half years.
2. Increase the production of domesticated hives by 700 hives within 2 and half years
3. Produce sufficient queens that will satisfy the demand for beekeepers
4. Enhance the capacity of the SVGBA to conduct its operations, (record keeping, inventory, registration of beekeepers, marketing, networking, project management and other important activities.
5. Improve the current for honey production standards and invest in the bottling and labelling of at least 6 honey products on the market.
