Seamoss is gaining traction in the international market as a powerful superfood with beneficial vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants. In addition to its human health benefits, seamoss farming has extensive biodiversity benefits as it provides an important habitat for juvenile fish, lobster, and other crustaceans.
The goal of the project is to increase the overall production of seamoss production in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, while improving the quality and increasing the capacity of existing and new growers through capacity development, training and financial support.

The objectives of the project are as follows:

1. To conduct national training sessions for seamoss growers (existing and new farmers) throughout SVG within the first year of the project.

2. Establish a national inventory of seamoss growers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines for tracking and quality control by the end of project implementation

3. Implement a Small Grants Programme for sea moss growers (existing and new) by the end of project implementation


Seamoss farming not only has the potential to be wildly beneficial for habitat but also for the livelihoods of farmers since there is now growing interest from international buyers to purchase seamoss from the Caribbean, including St. Vincent and the Grenadines. SusGren have been able to assist seamoss farmers in the Southern Grenadines under the current GEF-SGP seamoss and honey project by putting them in contact with 13 international buyers to include New York, Philadelphia, Florida, California, New Jersey, Washington DC, England, and The Netherlands.

There is therefore rich potential to develop a thriving industry, and if developed sustainably, can serve as a model where the technology, knowledge and skills gained can be replicated and exported to other Caribbean Islands. As such, it is essential that seamoss farming be implemented in a well-planned and effectively managed way from the very start.
