Livelihoods in Sustainable Mariculture ? Spiny Lobster and Sea Moss Farming along the East and South East Coast of Saint Lucia.
This project aims to establish a lobster and sea moss farm within the Savannes Bay Ramsar Site along the South Eat Coast of Saint Lucia. The grantee hopes to build capacity and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for young people within the administrative quarter of Vieux Fort ad Dennery. The project objectives are as follows: (i) to train/retrain 20 young people from the communities of Dennery and Vieux-Fort in sustainable mariculture practices for lobster farming; and sea-moss farming and cultivation during the first 4 months of this 2 year project; (ii) to provide necessary equipment, financial and technical support to assist trained youth in starting, maintaining sea-moss and lobster farms through-out the project; (iii) to design or adapt a research programme which gathers specific date on the growth, ecology and financial viability of the project; (iv) to design and implement a marketing and promotions plan which promotes the uniqueness of the product and develops the market for future growth; and (v) to implement a formative and summative evaluation plan which will help to avoid project delays and distil lessons for future project improvement.

Gender Focus
Both young men and women are slated to participate and benefit in the project. Out of a total membership of 28 persons, 10 are men and 18 are women.
