Strengthen the socio-economic-environmental condition of the war affected coastal population through land rehabilitation & mangrove plantation
Poonakary area is well known for its paddy cultivation and livestock but unfortunately without a proper salt water exclusion bund the sea water entering to certain paddy lands negatively changes the fertility and makes the paddy lands and water salty. According to the information collected from farmers and government officials out of 1500acres (625 hectares), 600 acres (250 hectares) are being affected when the sea level goes up it enters in to close by paddy lands. The poor farmers having notified this matter to relevant authorities are unable to rectify the pollution without any financial support as a war affected community.
However, this particular project envisages construction of salt water exclusion bund to create income generation opportunities towards sustainable livelihood recovery. As agriculture is the main source of income, the availability of local resources for investing in this project would be an asset for success and sustainability.
On the other there is no mangrove plants/forests at Gowtharimunai sea show. It is also one of the reasons for sea water entering to paddy lands and coastal damage from hurricanes. The nature of this plant is that the dense root systems of mangrove forests trap sediments flowing down rivers and off the land. This helps stabilizes the coastline and prevents erosion from waves and storms. This project promotes plantation of mangrove plants that protect sea water, home for a large variety of fish, crab, shrimp, and mollusk species. Livelihood of fishing community in the area gradually increases. As this community struggles to get firewood and travel a long distance facing life thread from wild animals, by this protect they enjoy firewood from mangrove. Ultimately, mangrove forests vitally important to coral reef and commercial fisheries as well.
