Sustainable use of water resources to ensure cultivation of arable lands and increased yield in Lusaghbyur community

The project aims at strengthening the capacities of Lusaghbyur community to address environmental challenges, such as land degradation and climate changes, as well as produce socio-economic benefits to tackle rural poverty and ensure food security.

Within the project it is envisaged to introduce a sustainable land-water management system through demonstration of high-value crop cultivation technologies, construction of a gravity irrigation system for restoration of community lands and industrial landscapes, as well as operation of a cereal crops separating and sorting machinery for the community needs. The project will also support strengthening local capacities in application of smart agro-ecological practices. As a result of the project implementation, around 120 hectares of land will be returned to cultivation, thus improving the livelihood of 250 households in Lusaghbyur community. Moreover, introduction of high-value crops which is also intended to ne managed through the community Climate Revolving fund, will ensure increased income for the local population, and contribute to the sustainable use of production landscapes, and reduction of the poverty and migration in the community.

Capacity - Building Component

The project activities will be accompanied by targeted capacity building. About 1200 local farmers will build their capacities on sustainable use of land and water resources, as well as operation of the cereal crops sorting machinery.

Gender Focus

The project direct beneficiaries are all members of the project communities; thus, it is aimed to ensure gender balance in all its activities. However, it should be taken into consideration that the project will positively influence the economic well-being of households, where major responsibility is carried by women. Expansion of irrigated farmlands and cultivation of high-value crops will ensure food security and additional income for the community households, and women in particular.

Replication of project activities

The project has a high potential for replication, as the problems addressed are similar to other rural settlements throughout Armenia. Moreover, use of cereal crops separating and sorting machinery will enable the community members to market their production at a higher price and serve a good incentive for the neighboring communities to replicate this practice.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project plans to introduce a sustainable land-water management system in Lusaghbyur community through introduction of smart agro-ecological technologies, construction of an irrigation system to direct springs and underground water and operation of cereal crops separating and sorting machinery. These measures will essentially contribute to cultivation of arable lands that have been abandoned for years and sustainable use of water resources, which will consequently contribute to the reduction of poverty in the community and improvement of livelihoods of the population. Availability of irrigation water will encourage to cultivate high-quality climate-resilient agricultural crops, thus ensuring improved local income. It is estimated, that as a result of the implemented measures, the annual increased income will make up over US$300,000 for the community households.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project plans to raise public awareness on innovative agro-ecological approaches and water management practices through brochures, newspaper articles, disseminated through local TV and other media channels.

Project sustainability

The project sustainability is based on the complex measures that include environmental, social and economic components. The sustainable land-water management system introduced in the community will contribute to the restoration of degraded lands, efficient use of water resources and conservation of biodiversity through application of crop rotation scheme. The constructed irrigation system will enable cultivating over 120 ha of farmlands and thus, ensure increased income for the community members. Moreover, the cereal crops separating and sorting machinery will be managed by Lusaghbyur community Climate Revolving Fund, that will ensure directing saved funds to solving other community problems.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project will aim to increase the knowledge and capacities of the community-level stakeholders on introduced innovative resource-efficient agro-ecological practices and techniques. The project results, experiences, and lessons learned will be shared with stakeholders at regional and national level through project reports, public events, and other media channels.

Notable Community Participation

Within the framework of the project implementation, special attention would be paid to the involvement of youth. The project team will encourage local youth to participate in meetings, discussions and trainings. These meetings will increase their level of awareness and knowledge on issues related to the complex management of natural resources, ecosystem services, and opportunities for improved livelihoods for local communities. The trainings will also cover sustainable horticulture, land and water management and other related environmental topics. 20 teachers and 50 schoolchildren will be also engaged in trainings.

Project Results

The project will produce the following results:

? 1670-meter-long irrigation system constructed to cultivate 120 hectares of abandoned farmlands;

? High-value crops cultivation practices introduced;

? Use of cereal crops separating and sorting machinery ensured US$300,000 additional income for the 250 community households;

? At least 1,200 community members have improved capacities and increased knowledge on sustainable horticulture, land use and water management, and other innovative agro-ecological practices.
