Compost Academy

The aim of ?Compost Academy? project is to increase public awareness about the importance of composting, create small scale composting stations and engage locals in day-to-day activities that can help reduce emission of chemicals and create fertilizers with no chemicals. The overall objective is to increase public awareness about the proper organic waste management practices and create new business opportunities in composting for urban settlements. The Compost Academy project has three main components:
- Creating small composting workshops in 5 selected schools/educational institutions;
- Increase public awareness through promotional campaigns and installation of composting bins in several locations available for general public to compost their waste (in partnership with the local authorities of Yerevan and Armavir region);
- Piloting organic waste composting in 10 organizations (e.g. banks, food courts, etc.) and development of proposal to be provided to the government of Armenia.

Project Characteristics and Results

Policy Influence

Based on the results and findings, ISSD will develop a case study (know-hows) to be share with the municipality of Yerevan and other interested stakeholders (government, communities, etc.) that are interested in starting composting activities but have limited experience in launching similar activities or have doubts about its productivity and profitability.

Gender Focus

ISSD has always ensured equal opportunities for both men and women. Throughout the project the team will make sure to communicate all messages in a way to engage both men and women from beneficiary organizations. All beneficiaries will be offered opportunities to participate in trainings, public and other events.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

ISSD is planning to develop a case study on know-hows of the project, which will be presented to the Government of Armenia and shared with interested communities and organizations. In addition, the team will develop promotional materials including promotional video, workbook for youth, training materials, guidelines and other print/digital materials that will be used for communications and marketing. It is also planned to undertake several events and competitions to increase public awareness and engagement.

Replication of project activities

ISSD will use two main methods: - Development and dissemination of a research paper that will include statistical analysis of the results, results of focus groups, etc. - Development of a case study on know-hows to be share with the government of Armenia and other interested stakeholders (communities/organizations).

Capacity - Building Component

Implementation of the project will help ISSD team in developing the following capacities: - Strong experience in simultaneous management of several multi-component and multi-stakeholder composting activities; - Establishment of new partnership opportunities with the local communities, networking; - (Participatory) monitoring and evaluation, capacity development; - Advanced experience in educating various stakeholders in the field of composting.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project mainly focuses on launching composting activities in Armenia and supporting the locals in getting high quality compost from organic waste. This has two positive impacts ? firstly it may create new income stream for the locals and secondly it will have positive impact on the environment which can help those engaged in agricultural activities and so on. Within the project various stakeholders are going to get hands on experience which will also help them starting startups in this field, for which later they can raise additional funds.

Project sustainability

The sustainability of the project is planned to be achieved in the following way: - Showcasing the benefits of composting to the educational institutions for them to continue the practice after the pilot project is completed - Development of dissemination of know how guidelines to the communities based on the experience of Yerevan and Armavir (by proving the monetary benefits of the project the communities will start undertaking composting activities similar to sorting of recyclable waste) - Sales and maintenance of composting services to be provided to the organizations (businesses) to meet their CSR and promote green economy - Partnership with agricultural organizations to provide fertilizers to the businesses or offer deals - Grants, local subsidies and additional funds raised to enter other markets (in this case other communities/organizations/institutions)

The team is currently, considering partnership with a university in the Netherlands and will apply for other grants and funds to expand the project.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The team will develop promotional materials including promotional video, workbook for youth, training materials, guidelines and other print/digital materials that will be used for communications and marketing. It is also planned to undertake several events and competitions to increase public awareness and engagement. All the composting bins/stations will also have logos of the donor and the implementing organization. Through creation of composting sights, ISSD will ensure that general public and targeted groups and communities are aware about the project through publishing information via its networks, online channels (including social media) and by partnering with local media agencies (e.g. participation in morning programs).

Notable Community Participation

Throughout the project the team will make sure to communicate all messages in a way to engage both men and women. Since the team is targeting partnership with local schools and educational institutions, obviously big portion of the work will be done with local youth from Yerevan and the regions. All the events organized within the project will be open for different types of groups (depending on the type of event), however the main focus will be on engaging the youth.

Project Results

The project will produce the following results:

- 5 educational institutions have waste composting workshop stations
- Up to 500 students of selected institutions have undergone special training program (direct beneficiaries), while other students bring organic waste to the station
- Startup idea generation trainings (in partnership with ICARE Foundation) are conducted and at least 1 startup created
- Cobranded signs are installed in selected institutions
- 2 promotional videos are developed
- At least 1 composting site is launched
- At least 20t of organic waste has been collected
- 1 ?know-how? case study has been developed
- 10 public events have been organized for overall 10,000 people
- 1 workbook is developed
- Overall, 50,000 people have been reached
- Composting bins are installed in at least 10 organizations/offices
- Trainings are conducted in all partner organizations
- Corresponding signs and promotional materials are provided
- Regular pickup is organized (if needed)
