TRADITIONAL ECOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE IN PACIFIC ISLAND OF TUVALU
In an effort to strengthen community level adaptation capacity in the face of climate variability, Tuvalu project team collaborated with USP-Tuvalu campus to record vital Traditional Ecological Knowledges (TEK) on weather forecasting.
Traditional Weather Indicators is a branch of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) or place based ecological knowledge that was used by elders to forecast weather patterns. Under the leadership Dr. Rosiana Lagi, USP Tuvalu Campus Director, the project team interviewed and recorded testimonies from elders from eight island communities of Tuvalu to find out about the use of traditional weather indicators at the community level.
The outcome of the oral interviews has been developed into a YouTube (https://youtu.be/KhEOVbJ2Xxo ), first of its kind in the region, which is currently being at both the community level and academic setting. On June 6, 2021, the video was featured as a side event during the Pacific Resilience Meeting in Fiji.
