Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

3 new urban spaces appeared in the city of Rustavi. The results of the project benefit the people living around these three areas, their living spaces have been improved and they will be loaded with recreational functions. As a result of planting more than 1000 trees, much more oxygen will be released in the city. In the long term, the city will contribute to the adoption of sustainable urban solutions and the establishment of a culture of appropriate maintenance of planted trees.

Capacity - Building Component

Before the launch of the project, the team members of the "Gavigudet" voluntarily implemented a number of different projects, including two greening projects. The mentioned activity requires a lot of time and human resources, therefore, the small funding provided within the project can be considered as a capacity building for the team members to continue this important activity and encourage other people to be involved in this process of sustainable urban solutions. In addition, the project contributed to the information/experience sharing and the strengthening of ties with local or central organizations, which is vitally importance for the future activities of the organization (the grantee).

Gender Focus

Both women and men and citizens in general will benefit equally from the results of the project, regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, religious affiliation or sexual orientation, because polluted air, unsustainable urban development and lack of green spaces affect them equally. In addition, both women and men were equally involved in the development stage of the project. The coordinator of the project is a woman. The grantee has already implemented a similar project as a volunteer, and both women and men were equally involved in its implementation and subsequent monitoring (meaning both management, project participants and volunteers). Accordingly, gender issues are fully considered in the project and the role of women and men will be balanced as much as possible within all phases of the project.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

During the project implementation, the yard of three educational institutions were greened. In addition to the school/college communities, the people living in the neighborhood of these areas will benefit from the project results as well with the improved living spaces and future recreational opportunities. As the result of planting more than 1,000 trees, much more oxygen will be released in the city and the spread of solid dust particles will be prevented, which is one of the biggest problems in Rustavi city. In addition, a micro-climate will be created in these places, which is a local action against climate change. In the long-term, the adoption of sustainable urban solutions will be promoted and culture of maintenance of planted trees will be implemented.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

In order to involve the local community, consultative meetings were held with the community in order to take into account their interests as much as possible. Therefore, in the very first month of the project, meetings with the school/college were organized. An architect also attended the meeting, for taking into account the interests of the school and the local population when designing the general plan for planting trees. The local population were involved in the greening campaign and maintenance of the trees. "Gavigudet" will form a group of volunteers who will be students of green schools and/or local residents and will monitor the green yards with their involvement. In addition, the representatives of the school/college community will be given lessons.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information about the project is being provided to the population, other organizations, stakeholders and interested persons through social media of the organization (the grantee), which has more than 14,000 followers. In addition, the 5 lessons held in the target schools of the project to popularize environmental issues will also contribute to awareness raising.

Notable Community Participation

The project implementation team is mainly composed of young people. Also, at all stages of project implementation, youth people were involved - organized classes for students, planting of trees during greening campaigns, their maintenance, etc. In addition, the majority of the subscribers of the "Gavigudet" (the grantee) are young people, therefore, information about the project's activities is also distributed through social media.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

grantees' team members are constantly sharing information and knowledge with the community both through their social media and personal communication. In case of the interest from other organization the grantee will definitely consult with them, because their goal is to make Rustavi greener in the shortest possible time, to help improve air quality in the city.

Project Results

The yard of three educational institutions was greened and the area of green spaces in Rustavi increased by 6357 m2,
More than 1000 trees were planted within the project.
Students and pupils improved their knowledge in environmental issues (more than 120 people attended classes and seminars.
The number of people involved in volunteer/environmental activities has increased (volunteers, including the school community and the population living around the greened area, have been involved in the greening of both areas. Active maintenance of the greened areas is still ongoing with the involvement of volunteers
Inter-sector cooperation in the direction of making sustainable urban solutions, increasing green spaces and improving air quality was deepened , local and central authorities, representatives of private sector and community were jointly involved in greening activities
