Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

In all activities implemented within the project gender balance were maintained school children people living around the newly created urban areas will equally benefited by project activities and outcomes.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

People living near schools participated in the process of arranging the squares. They took part in the process of planting and watering the plants and also showed readiness to take care of the plants in the future.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Sharing information about the activities planned and implemented within the project through social media networks, as well as organizing information campaigns e.g. ostume show/procession in the street

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The grantee will get the most successful results from the activities of the project for knowledge management with the involvement of students, as the students will be involved in knowledge sharing activities by themselves and will have big motivation to interest their peers in the mentioned activities. The grantee will be able to measure and share the results with the photo/video material collected by the students, and then by sharing the information about the results of the project on social network platforms. In addition guidebook will be printed and distributed among interested stakeholders.

Notable Community Participation

The target audience of the project was 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th grade school students. Students were actively involved in both theoretical and practical activities defined by the project. The target audience of the last activity of the project (costume procession) was the elementary school students. Guidebook prepared within the framework of the project will be adapted for small children as well.

Project sustainability

When the seedlings planted in the squares in the school yard reach adulthood, the school will have additional green space, which is vital for the current state of urbanization. In addition, the wall paintings and information banners placed in the squares, as well as bird species are sustainable products that ensure the awareness of the public about the mentioned issue over a long period of time.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Within the framework of the project, a small squares were arranged in five public schools of Tbilisi and dozens of trees were planted in each one. In the long term, the mentioned activity will improve the ecological situation not only of the students, but also of the local population living nearby.

Capacity - Building Component

Project Results

3 theoretical meetings were held in 5 public schools, 30 students from each school attended all meetings (150 students in total).
A field trip was organized to the Digmi floodplains, 40 students participated. The participants got practical experience of working in the field.
An urban biodiversity-friendly square model was organized in the yard of 5 public schools.
40-50 students were involved in the activity.
A mural was created in 3 schools, which will raise awareness of urban biodiversity among schoolchildren and local residents for ten years.
The opening ceremony of the arranged square was held. 60 students participated in the event, as well as other students involved in the project.
A field trip was organized to the territory of Mtatsminda and Turtle Lake. 80 students participated. They took part in observing birds and making a herbarium.
A costumed procession was held. During the march, actors dressed as urban biodiversity species together with representatives of the organization met local residents and shared information about urban biodiversity, 200 informative greeting cards on the same topic were distributed.
500 unit guidebook about urban birds was printed, which will be distributed to schools participating in the project, organizations and young people interested in this field.
