Demonstration Project of Community Participatory Urban Biodiversity Conservation and Restoration in Beibei District, Chongqing
Baseline information:
While Beibei District is rich in the distribution of flora and fauna, biodiversity in Chengbei community, North Hot Spring Town is low. The natural ecosystem is disturbed by human activities, and the ecological service function is significantly reduced. This area has 1.8 hectares of green space system and 0.5 hectares of abandoned land both lacking effective management over the years. ecological restoration and conservation need to be carried out under the current ecological degradation and biodiversity reduction conditions. At the same time, the wetland of Maanxi River in the target area experience garbage built up that block the river, resulting in poor water flow, heavy water pollution, low quality of riparian habitats.
Main problems:
With the accelerating urbanization process, the rapid growth of urban population and the unreasonable over-exploitation of urban land for a long time, urban biological habitats have been destroyed and polluted, resulting in decreasing the environmental capacity and ecological carrying capacity of urban ecosystems and biodiversity. Beibei district of Chongqing is in the ecologically fragile area in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River with a high-density population, large urban construction, and anthropogenic disturbance. This area experiences a large amount of soil erosion and flooding result from damaged areas of urban natural ecosystems.
Local urban residents generally have a low level of biodiversity knowledge and low awareness of urban natural ecosystem protection. The natural ecosystem in the project area has landscape fragmentation, poor ecological connectivity, and habitat loss. The lack of vegetation protection on slopes also leads to landslide instability, reduces the green capacity of the town, and lowers the productivity of the system. Furthermore, the landscape function of the natural ecosystem in the project area is degraded and the service flow of the natural ecosystem is blocked.
Activities:
1. Carry out a participatory survey in Beibei District. Monitor and evaluate the condition of urban biodiversity in the Beibei District.
2. By adopting comprehensive landscape ecological restoration methods, demonstrate the restoration of ecological degradation and vulnerable areas in urban communities, connect ecological corridors, and improve biodiversity and restore the ecological service functions of natural ecosystems. Monitor and evaluate the condition before, after and during the restoration.
3. Carry out participatory biodiversity conservation activities at the community level in Maanxi Wetland, improve the habitat conditions of the wetland ecosystem, enhance the service function of the wetland ecosystem, and improve the ecosystem service flow.
4. Promote sustainable eco-friendly lifestyles and build community habitat micro-gardens (not only for community enjoyment and recreation but also as habitats). Build eco-friendly communities by using a participatory approach, improve environmental quality and habitat conditions for organisms, and thereby increase biodiversity in the project area.
5. Community organizations (including neighbourhood committees, homeowners' committees, property management committees, volunteer organizations, bird-watching associations, etc.) actively participate in the design, construction, operation and care of community micro-parks and community habitat micro-gardens (unmanaged urban "dead ends" and courtyards). Carry out publicity and exchange activities and training seminars on biodiversity conservation and sustainable management based on urban communities. Conduct community-based bird watching, insect and plant monitoring and recording activities in restoration demonstration sites.
6. Survey community residents' awareness of urban biodiversity. Collect feedback, organize study tours and exchanges, and drive neighbouring communities to actively participate in urban biodiversity conservation.
7. Compile and distribute project brochures in Chinese and English. Using media to promote this project.
Anticipated outcomes:
1. Fully grasp the status and dynamics of biodiversity in the community. Carry out a comprehensive report on participatory survey and evaluation of biodiversity in Beibei District; Carry out a proposal on biodiversity restoration and conservation of urban communities in Beibei District for government reference.
2. Restore 2.3 hectares of the degraded ecosystem in urban communities and establish one community biodiversity conservation demonstration site. Increase at least 3-5 species of indigenous species.
3. Clean garbage in Ma 'a Xi wetland and clear coastal invasive plants. Increase at least 5 wetland native plant species. Compile the Handbook of Wetland Biodiversity Conservation with Community participation and organize two public visits and exchange activities in the project area.
4. Establish three community habitat micro-gardens, totalling 500 m2, with significant improvement in the quality of the community ecological environment, to be specific, more than 5,000 new native plants, more than 5 species of birds, insects and other animals benefited, and a significant increase in biodiversity. Construction of 10 model households of community ecological civilization.
5. It is expected to hold 4 training courses and 2 seminars on biodiversity conservation and sustainable management based on urban communities, with a total of 240 participants. Carry out participatory bird watching in demonstration sites for 8 times, with a total of 120 participants; Hold nature notes (including bird watching, insect and plant monitoring records) contest for 4 times, with a total of 80 participants.
6. Conduct a sample survey of 1,000 people at the community level; the number of community residents in the project area who are aware of the importance of urban biodiversity conservation will reach over 90%; the number of residents who actively participate in urban biodiversity conservation activities will reach over 50%. Organize 2 study tours and exchanges; motivate at least 1 neighbouring community to participate in urban biodiversity conservation activities.
7. Compile and distribute 1500 copies of the project brochure. Using media includes TV and the internet to obtain, share and disseminate knowledge and experience from the implementation of this project in multiple formats.
