Beijing Urban Wetland Restoration and Biodiversity Conservation Project
Baseline information:
Beijing Aobei Forest Park is on the northern green wedge of Beijing's regional green space system. The current situation has problems such as single tree species, not rich plant species, isolated islands of park green space, poor structural stability of wetland system, and single habitat for birds and small beasts. In addition, the lack of knowledge and understanding of biodiversity conservation-related knowledge and concepts among residents of surrounding communities has to some extent limited the public's effective and active participation in urban biodiversity conservation.
The Beijing Municipal Commission of Transportation, Beijing Municipal Water Bureau, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape Architecture are currently renovating and upgrading the Aobei Forest Park, and have made comprehensive plans for the park's transportation, water system, ecology, and activity facilities. The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape Architecture plans to bring mountain biodiversity into the city, build ecological corridors, construct diverse urban habitats with naturalistic techniques, and enhance the park's woodland habitat. The Ecological Restoration Division of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape Architecture is specifically responsible for the planning and project implementation of biodiversity conservation in Aobei Forest Park. The Beijing Forestry Society has communicated with the Ecological Restoration Division of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape Architecture the intention to carry out wetland conservation and restoration related project activities in the Aobei Forest Park, and the content of the activity plan has been positively affirmed.
The "Beijing Urban Wetland Restoration and Biodiversity Conservation Project" will focus on wetland protection and restoration in Aobei Forest Park, planting a variety of wetland plants in the demonstration area, enhancing the structural stability of the wetland system, micro-terrain modification of the wetland shoreline, and creating a diverse habitat suitable for birds and other wildlife; strengthening biodiversity monitoring, and providing a better understanding of the effects of wetland restoration and animal habitat modification. Biodiversity monitoring will be strengthened to provide data support for wetland restoration and animal habitat transformation effect assessment, and also provide a basis for biodiversity conservation technology promotion and demonstration; biodiversity conservation training and popularization activities will be carried out to improve the level of the biodiversity conservation plan and practical ability of relevant personnel, and to raise the level of public awareness to participate in biodiversity conservation.
Main problems
1. The current situation of Beijing Aobei Forest Park has problems such as fragmentation of ecological space, single vegetation species, lack of changes in shoreline, overly open water surface, lack of diverse habitats and animal habitats such as deep pools and shallows, and large disturbance to wildlife activities caused by human activities.
2. Theoretical and practical levels related to wetland conservation and biodiversity protection of all staff need to be improved.
3. The lack of public awareness of participation in biodiversity conservation and related knowledge.
Activities:
1. Carry out demonstration project aims to protect and restore urban wetland in
Beijing's Aobei Forest Park.
2. Monitor bird diversity based on wetland conservation and carry out restoration demonstration activities.
3. Carry out capacity building activities such as training on wetland restoration and biodiversity conservation for the management and technical staff of Aobei Forest Park and other related urban forest parks.
4. Promote biodiversity conservation, science popularization and experience activities for community residents and the public around the Aobei Forest Park to raise their awareness and enthusiasm for biodiversity conservation.
5. Develop standards, submit policy proposals, exchange project experiences, compile project brochures.
Anticipated outcomes:
1. Protect and restore 30 acres of wetlands, increase bird species by at least 10-15%, increase overall numbers by at least 15-20%, and involve no less than 100 people from the local communities in demonstration activities.
2. It is expected to have 100 community residents participated in biodiversity conservation and monitoring activities in Aobei Forest Park. Moreover, increase the level of biodiversity monitoring, obtained data to evaluate the effect of bird habitat modification, and hence promote the biodiversity restoration technology with data support.
3. It is expected to have 200 participates in capacity building activities including training sessions.
4. It is expected to have 1500 participates from the residents would gain knowledge about biodiversity conservation and increase their awareness of participating in biodiversity conservation.
5. Promote project demonstration results, formulate policies for biodiversity conservation in Beijing and promote high-quality development of biodiversity conservation and forestry in Beijing during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. Publish the standard developed in the project, submit one proposal and distribute at least 500 copies of the project brochure.
