Recognition and protection of the Traditional Vacarian Territory in the valleys of the Vacaria and Peixe Bravo Rivers

This project aims to support the process of self-recognition of identity and defense of territories, communities that claim to be vacarian, located in the upper-middle river Vacaria, North of Minas Gerais state, as well as proposing initiatives capable of helping communities to protect themselves in the face of the COVID pandemic. -19 and food insecurity. Instruments such as Tô no Mapa (mapping of invisible communities), TICCAs, state and national legislation and international conventions will be used to defend their rights.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

1. Traditional Vacarian Territory Data Collection on Communities and Map of Families on the proposed theme 2. Making handmade soaps to expand communities' self-protection against COVID-19 3. Installation of food production and seed saving fields 4 Carry out training actions related to territorial and environmental rights, social mapping, aiming at the recognition and protection of traditional Vacanian territories 5. Influence in the spaces of formulation, management and negotiation of public policies related to territorial, social and environmental rights

Notable Community Participation

It was promoted a ethnophotography workshop with the majority participation of the youth. The workshop aimed at strengthening the identity and territoriality of traditional peoples, among them, the Vacarianos.

Policy Impact

One of the actions of the project is to include a Vacariano representation in the State Commission of Traditional Peoples and Communities of Minas Gerais; this achievement will contributed to publicize the existence of this people and demand public actions to this audience.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The knowledge are been shared mainly in public midias and video materials.

Gender Focus

The men are more involved with the work in the production field and the women are more involved with the production of the handmaid soaps. The participations in the training activities and meetings has been well distributed across genders. At the State Commission of Traditional Peoples and Communities of Minas Gerais, the Vacarianos is been represented by a women lider and a men lider.

Planning non gef grant

The organization will seek to keep the communities articulated and will seek resources to strengthen their recognition as traditional people.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project is strongly dedicate to communication actions; so far a representative of the local community has been hired to work with the communication of the project and develop actions with the youth. They are using social midias and producing videos to publicize project actions and way of life of traditional peoples and communities, among them, the Vacarianos.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will implemented food production camp and saving native seeds in 3 communities.

Project sustainability

Two Vacarian communities had implemented irrigation system for food production benefiting 100 families; one communitie implemented water supply system benefiting 35 families

Policy Influence

Two representatives of the Vacarian Communities reached seats on the state council of traditional peoples and communities, which is a precedent for incidence in public policies aimed at this segment.

Project Results

The results achieved involve the support and strengthening of identity self-recognition and self-demarcation processes of the Vacarian communities and their territories, which is of great importance, as they are often threatened by territorial conflicts. The effectiveness of the actions was also reflected in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the expansion of self-protection of communities through information and guidance on preventive practices. The strengthening of traditional agricultural systems and the incidence in spaces for the formulation, management and negotiation of public policies related to territorial, social and environmental rights point to a new moment in the life of the community served.
