Xining City Public Participatory Urban Biodiversity Conservation Project
Xining City Public Participatory Urban Biodiversity Conservation Project
Baseline information:
The total area of the Beishan forest area accounts for 33.6% of the total area of Mutual County, of which the area of forested land and natural forest protection project area is the highest in the province. Forestry land area of 100391.65 hectares, of which 50235.02 hectares of tree woodland, 2938.26 hectares of sparse forest land, shrub land area of 41,732.69 hectares, the total live wood storage 4,802,700 cubic meters, the forest coverage rate of 78.95%. There are 1,209 species of higher plants in the forest area, 51 species of national key plants (short-mangled Phyllanthus, Tangut scabious) and 31 species of provincial key plants (jellyfish snowdrops, black bush, etc.).
There are 193 species of wild animals identified in the Beishan forest area, including 15 species of fish, 3 species of amphibians, 2 species of reptiles, 40 species of animals and 133 species of birds. Among them, there are 36 species of national key protected wild animals, including 9 species of Class I and 27 species of Class II protected animals. The biodiversity is well preserved and the conditions for nature observation are excellent, which is very suitable for the development of education under the topic of biodiversity.

Main problems and needs:
Based on the location advantages and basic conditions of Beishan Forestry, the management of the forestry field agreed that the ecological value of the natural resources of Beishan Forestry Field and the promotion of the high-quality development of Beishan Forestry Field is the direction that the forestry field and the regional community will explore and develop, and needs the participation and support of multiple parties. Beishan Forestry and Nature Circle have already reached cooperation on the joint construction of the Beishan Nature Forest School project, which has been officially launched in May 2021. The future Beishan Forest School will provide an excellent demonstration base for biodiversity science education and nature education in Xining and surrounding towns. With rich experience in ecological conservation and cultural heritage protection in pastoralist communities, the project will allow the community, the urban public and nature education service providers to join forces and explore ways to introduce highland biodiversity for the public in the Beishan Forestry School and Xining. Nature education practices.

Located in the easternmost part of the Qilian Mountains, the Beishan Forestry Range is the nearest biodiversity-rich area to Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, from the alpine meadow ecosystem to the forested canyon area, and is not only valuable for local ecological education, but also the best place for nature education for the city (Xining citizens and schools). Combining the current policy of prioritizing ecological conservation and the rich natural resources of the area, the forest resources of Beishan Forestry Field are used to introduce Qinghai's biodiversity to the public in Xining through nature experience and nature education. There are more than one hundred ecological rangers in the forest, besides patrolling, how to improve the ability of rangers, including relevant knowledge skills and interpretation ability, so that the rangers can participate in more ecological conservation work is the current need to carry out the conservation work in Beishan Forestry.

Activities:
1. Carry out the Ranger Nature Guiding Training Selection and Project Initiation Meeting. Project stakeholders, forest rangers and community ranger representatives understand the project objectives and activities and support the project.
2. Establish a highland native plant green space garden.
3. Carry out theoretical and practical training sessions for rangers and volunteers.
4. Organize two (with at least 20 participants) nature experience activities for local community youth.
5. Develop and compile an electronic brochure on biodiversity in the North Mountain Forest, to be displayed on the web platform and distributed to the participants.
6. Collaborate with nature school and museum program launched by Circle of Nature in Beishan Forestry, organize nature experience activities for the youth from Xining City to participate.
7. Cooperate with Xining Zoo to set up a long-term Bei Shan Forest School urban biodiversity science and technology promotion base in the park. Carry out with a resource-saving, public participatory and low-operating cost approach.
8. Organize a biodiversity science popularization campaign at Xining Zoo or city mall, and actively join with relevant conservation organizations (e.g. Shanshui, Yunshan Conservation) to enhance the impact of the campaign.
9. Carry out two sharing sessions on the theme of biodiversity in Beishan Forestry in two schools in Xining City.

Anticipated outcomes:
1. It is expected to have 30 participates from government departments, forestry, communities, schools, and other related departments.
2. Raise public awareness on native plant species protection. Establish a 200 square meter green space garden with at least 10 species of native plants and have 300 citizens participate in activities.
3. Rangers and forestry workers are expected to increase awareness of biodiversity conservation and understand the concept and status of nature education; acquire the basic skills to become nature education docents. No less than 20 rangers and employees are expected in participating the training sessions, with no less than 1/4 of the personnel are female.
4. Increase awareness of biodiversity conservation among youth in the local community and have 40 participates in total.
5. It is expected to have over 3000 views on the project brochure, which is a way to spread the knowledge of biodiversity in North Mountain Forestry.
6. It is expected to have 40 youth participants in this activity who gain biodiversity-related knowledge and increase awareness of conservation.
7. The scientific promotion base keeps operating in the long run and increase the awareness and ability of Xining citizens in biodiversity conservation. Carry out 20 activities under the topic of biodiversity.
8. Increase awareness of biodiversity conservation among Xining citizens. It is expected to have 2000 participants.
9. Increase awareness of biodiversity conservation among students and it is expected to have 300 participants.
